ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University volleyball team begins a four-match road trip this week with a pair of matches against Seattle Pacific University and Saint Martin's University.
"We need to make sure we prepare each day," CWU Head Coach
Mario Andaya said. "This week we can go for a day trip and come back. Four different places in four days, we just need to make sure we are preparing and staying healthy like we need to."
Seattle Pacific is 6-10 on the season, with a 4-4 record in Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches. The Falcons have won their last two matches over Montana State Billings (3-1) and Saint Martin's University (3-0).
Hannah Lautenbach leads the Falcons with 157 kills on the season. Lexi Biondi has recorded 142 kills and averages 3.16 kills per set. Biondi has missed two of SPU's 16 matches. Symone Tran handles the setting duties for the Falcons. She has compiled 502 assists, over 54 sets, for an average of 9.30 assists per set. Amanda Ganete and Breanne Wiekamp have each notched 15 service aces.
Wiekamp leads the Falcons with 298 digs. Shaun Crespi has totaled seven solo blocks and 25 block assists to lead the Falcons in the front row.
Saint Martin's has posted a 2-11 record and sits at 1-6 in GNAC play. They have lost their last two matches to Seattle Pacific (0-3) and Montana State Billings (0-3).
Julia Wabinga leads the Saints with 111 kills and is averaging 2.58 kills per set. Both Kyra Davidson and Rebecca Mitchell have notched 82 kills. Cassandra Fenton has dished out 286 assists on the season.
Defensively, Davidson leads the Saints with nine solo blocks and 42 block assists. Elizabeth Colon has recorded a team high 135 digs on the season. She averages 4.50 digs per set.
Central Washington holds a 10-5 record with a 6-2 mark in GNAC matches. In their last five matches the Wildcats are 4-1.
Linden Firethorne leads the Wildcats with 213 kill and is averaging 3.74 kills per set.
The Wildcats continue to appear among NCAA Division II leaders.
Sabrina Wheelhouse is 16
th in Division II with a hitting percentage .401 and 12
th in blocks per set at 1.33.
Kaitlin Quirk is second in blocks per set, putting up 1.44 blocks per set.
As a team, the Wildcats lead Division II in blocks per set with 2.92 blocks per set. Central's 28 solo blocks and 283 block assists (169.5 total) is tied for ninth in Division II.
"Those two work hard," Andaya added. "Everyone on our team works hard and has bought into the blocking scheme right now."
Catie Fry is averaging 10.57 assists per set and is currently 30
th in Division II.
"We like to spread the ball out more, rather than just getting it to our outside hitters," Andaya acknowledged. "We have a good middle core with Sabrina and Kaitlin,
Erin Little, and Sara Joffs. They work really hard together. Sabrina has been outstanding with hitting percentage so far. Catie does a great job moving the ball around and finding the right people in big situations."
Kiah Jones has notched 127 kills, while Quirk is close behind with 122.
Lindsey Milner leads the Wildcats with 228 blocks, averaging 3.93 per set.
Quirk has recorded four solo blocks and 75 block assists. Wheelhouse leads the Wildcats with 13 solo blocks. She has also recorded 60 block assists.
Madison Weg has two solo blocks and 48 block assists.
"As the season progresses we need to continue to stay committed to what we are good at, as opponent offenses get better and start to key in on things they do well," Andaya noted. "We need to do a good job to make sure our blockers know their assignments and keep their techniques."
