Wildcats Drop Twin Bill Against Corban

WILLSONVILLE, Ore. (Feb. 20) – The Central Washington University baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to Corban University with scores of 3-6 and 0-3.  The Wildcats are now 0-3 on the season, while Corban improves to 2-4.
 
Mackenzie Gaul went four innings of one-run baseball in the front-end of the twin bill.  Gaul allowed five hits and two walks, but he struck out two hitters. 
 
Corban opened the scoring in the third inning when Hayden Calvert singled home Vince Gonzalez, taking a 1-0 lead.
 
The Wildcats responded in the fifth inning.  Darren Honeysett reached on an error, scoring Benjamin Dunbar from second.  Dunbar reached via a walk to leadoff the inning.
 
Central broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh inning.  Ryan Atkinson tripled home Honeysett.
 
Atkinson finished the first game with a 3-for-5 mark at the plate with a triple and two runs batted in. 
 
Calvert struck again for the Warriors in the bottom half of the seventh.  He singled home Daniel Freiburger.  A few batters later, Landon Frost hit a grand slam giving Corban a 6-2 lead.
 
Atkinson drove in Honeysett in the top of the ninth inning, cutting the deficit to 6-3, but the Warriors held on.
 
Zach Haggett (0-1) was charged with his first loss of the season, while Dallas Broge (1-0) picked up his first win.
 
The back-end of the day saw seven innings of one-hit ball from Corban starter Connor Mattison.  The lone hit against Mattison came from Central shortstop Bryton Redal.  Mattison (1-0) recorded his first win of the season, while Daniel Aranda notched the save.
 
Mitch Yada (0-1) went 5.2 innings for the Wildcats, allowing three runs (one earned) and six hits.  Yada struck out two hitters. 
 
Kyle Blankenship went 1.1 innings of perfect relief with a pair of strikeouts.  CJ Gettman recorded a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout.
 
The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow (Feb. 21) for another doubleheader against Corban University.
