Ellensburg, Wash. (Sept. 21) – The Central Washington University soccer teams opens its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule against Simon Fraser, at home, on Thursday (Sept. 22) before heading over the Cascade Range to take on Seattle Pacific on Saturday (Sept. 24).
The Wildcats are 5-1-0 on the season after a record start, including taking down No. 24 Sonoma State. Central was handed its lone loss of the season last week against No. 6 UC San Diego in overtime.
"We've scored in every game this year, and against some of the best teams in the country," CWU Head Coach Mike Farrand said. "I think our offense is on the verge of coming together even more, despite having to grind out wins through some tough defenses. Until UCSD came up here, they hadn't given up any goals this season. Looking at Sonoma State, they're probably the best physical team in the region and we scored there and had chances to score more."
Central has scored 10 goals this season with eight different players finding the back of the net.
Keilin Farrand is the only Wildcat to have multiple goals on the season. Central Washington also benefitted from an own goal by Dominican. Farrand not only leads the Wildcats in goals, but is also tied for the team lead in assists with two. She has taken 14 shots, after taking just 19 in 2014.
Jessica Haga and the Wildcats' backline have held opponents to just four goals on 71 shots. The majority of those 71 shots have come from outside normal scoring range. Freshman goalkeeper
Emily Holt has tallied three clean sheets on 34 saves, one of which came on a penalty.
Simon Fraser enters Ellensburg with a 2-1-1 record, after most recently falling 0-4 to Concordia (Calif.). The Clan has amassed a 1-1-1 record away from home.
Emma Pringle has scored the only three goals the Clan have tallied this year. Not only is Pringle the lone goal scorer for Simon Fraser, she has also take roughly one-third of the Clan's shots.
In goal, Priya Sandhu has recorded 11 saves and recorded three clean sheets.
The Wildcats and Clan played two very different contests in 2015. When the two sides met in Burnaby, British Columbia, Simon Fraser squeaked by with a 1-0 victory. Then, in Ellensburg, the Wildcats routed the Clan 5-2.
"It's a big game," Farrand added. "We need to go get points every game out. We've had two opposite style games with Simon Fraser. Annie [Hamel] has done a great job turning the program around and she has some great girls. They got a good result against Dominican Hills earlier. We want to concentrate to pick up the points and really concentrate during the conference run and pickup points at the end of the year and do something special."
The Wildcats will then head to the west side for another GNAC match against Seattle Pacific. The Falcons open the week at 4-1-1. Their last match was a 3-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene, in their GNAC opener. Seattle Pacific has not lost since Sept. 7 at Chico State (0-1).
Hannah Huesers has notched three goals and one assists in six games. She has scored one-third of the Falcons' goals.
In net, Molly Stinson returns for SPU after a strong 2015. The net minder has already recorded two clean sheets and 23 saves.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Thursday and 7 p.m. on Saturday.
