ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 23) – After 11 matches on the road the Central Washington University women's volleyball team is finally back in the friendly confines of Nicholson Pavilion for a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup against Montana State University Billings.
The Wildcats have won six of their last seven matches, including a 3-1 decision over Northwest Nazarene earlier this week.
Prior to their loss against Western Oregon in five sets, the Wildcats were on a five-game winning streak.
After a 2015 season in which the Wildcats were consistently in the top 10 teams in the country in blocking, Central Washington is the second-best team in the country, averaging 2.70 blocks per set.
Sabrina Wheelhouse is tied for 4
th in blocks per set, averaging 1.50.
Erin Little ranks 22
nd overall in blocks per set at 1.19 and 16
th overall in total blocks (43).
Madison Weg continues to have a hot hand for Central. The sophomore has notched 115 kills with a hitting efficiency of .280, a team high. She is averaging 2.67 kills per set.
Joining Weg in the 100-plus kill category are
Kiah Jones and
Shelby Mauritson. Jones has notched 115 kills, while Mauritson has racked up 123.
Emerging strongly over the course of the past few matches,
Bridgette Webb has picked up 47 kills and 16 blocks.
The departure of three-time All-American setter
Catie Fry certainly left a vacancy on the floor for the Wildcats. Freshman setters
Gaby Aihara and
Nikki Cook have filled in admirably, dishing out a combined 456 assists through the first 11 matches.
After three weekend on the road, Central is ready to play on its home court.
"We are very excited to get back and finally play at home," CWU Head Coach
Mario Andaya said. "This team is ready to play for our crowd Saturday. It's been a long road trip, a lot of hours on buses. We can't wait to get in front of our home crowd."
Montana State Billings is off to a slow start in 2016. The Yellowjackets are 1-11 on the season. Their lone win came in the opening match of the season against BYU-Hawaii. Billings has been swept in all three GNAC matches it has played.
Stormy Siemion and Ashlynn Ward have been formidable offensive weapons for the Yellowjackets. Siemion leads MSUB with 179 kills, while Ward is close behind with 168.
Angala Jensen handles the setting duties, posting 443 assists in 12 matches.
First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Nicholson Pavilion. The first 100 students will receive a free t-shirt and free pizza. Any fan who checks in at women's rugby, football, and volleyball will receive extra points on the W.A.R. app.
