ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Apr. 12) – The Central Washington University baseball team hosts Saint Martin's University due to inclement weather in Lacey, Washington.
The Wildcats are coming off of a four-game sweep of Concordia University, including a pair of come from behind wins.
"We are on a pretty good stretch right now," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "We need to keep getting better and finding ways to be more consistent. Our defense struggled last weekend and we need to be better."
Saint Martin's enters the week with a 10-18 overall record and a 7-13 mark in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The Saints have lost their last three games.
The last series between Saint Martin's and Central Washington ended in 2-2 split in early March. The series was played in Kennewick, Washington due to Ellensburg's weather.
Alec Hagerman and Steven Sordahl lead the Saints' offense. Hagerman is hitting .348, but has only played in 19 of the Saints' 28 games. Sordahl has posted an average of .323 through the season thus far.
Saint Martin's is collectively hitting .256, with seven homeruns, and 92 runs batted in.
Ryan Dorney has yet to collect a win on the season for the Saints, but his earned run average of 2.87 is the best amongst starting pitchers for Saint Martin's. Dorney holds opposition hitters to an average of .284. He has pitched 37.2 innings and recorded 26 strikeouts.
As a unit, the Saints' pitching staff has an ERA of 4.79. They have notched 172 strikeouts and walked 99 hitters. Opposing teams are hitting .287 against the Saints.
Jake Levin earned his first GNAC player of the week selection as he had six hits, seven runs, five RBIs and two home runs as the Wildcats won four of five games this past week over Concordia. He went 2 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs in Saturday's opener, a 9-5 win over the Cavaliers, and went 2 for 5 in the nightcap, a 7-6 victory. His efforts helped make Central Washington the first 20-win team in the GNAC this season.
Dylan Freyre leads Central with an average of .395. He has recorded four homeruns and 18 runs batted in.
James Smith III leads the Wildcats with 25 runs batted in. Levin leads in homeruns with seven.
"Last time we played these guys we hadn't been outside yet," Storey noted. "We've been getting consistently better, but so have they. We need to continue to work on the small things. Our offense has improved and we found some consistency last weekend. The guys didn't quit, they battled all the way through and we were able to come from behind."
Central scored two runs in the eighth, and two more in the ninth, in game one against Concordia. In game two, the Wildcats pushed across five in the seventh, then one in both the eighth and ninth, in their 7-6 win.
