Legends Casino CWU Legends Spotlight: Dave Heaverlo

Ellensburg, Wash. – In partnership with Legends Casino, Central Washington University would like to highlight some legends from CWU's past.

Dave Heaverlo is an Ellensburg native who grew up in the nearby Thorp area. As a kid, Heaverlo and his family moved to Moses Lake. In high school, Heaverlo became a stand out pitcher for Moses Lake High School and attracted the attention of schools like Washington State University, Yakima College, Big Bend Community College and Gonzaga University.

It wasn't until speaking with Gary Frederick, a little league coach of Heaverlo's and CWU baseballs head coach of the time, that Heaverlo was swayed into attending CWU.

Heaverlo attended CWU from 1969-1972, earning a bachelor's degree in Special Education.

Dave Heaverlo had a remarkable career at CWU. stricking out 321 batters across 302 innings, this led him to an ERA of 1.79 and 31 career wins. Heaverlo was a big piece of the Wildcat pitching staff that played in the NAIA World Series in 1970. Heaverlo would also end up throwing two no-hit games against Eastern Washington University and Whitman University. CWU Retired Heaverlo's jersey (No. 1) in 1978. Heaverlo was then elected to the CWU Athletics Hall-of-Fame in 1983.

After his career with the Wildcats, Heaverlo was drafted in the 9th round of the 1972 MLB draft to be a relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants (1975-1977). After the Giants, Heaverlo would play for the Oakland Athletics from 1978-1979 and a short season with the Seattle Mariners 1980-81 before finishing his career back in Oakland with the Athletics in 1981.

During his major league career, Heaverlo posted 26 wins alongside 26 loses. Heaverlo also earned 26 saves across 356 games with a 3.41 career ERA.

Now that baseball was over, Heaverlo had found a new career in sports broadcasting. Heaverlo worked with KBSN in Moses Lake and KULE in Ephrata. He would then head into retirement before continuing his commitment to CWU.

Even after his retirement, Heaverlo continues to be involved with CWU. Heaverlo now does color commentating for CWU Football and the Wildcat Sports Radio Network. Heaverlo recently made a significant donation in 2016 to CWU Athletics in an effort to give back to the program that helped paved the way for his career. That article can be HERE
