ANCHORAGE, Alaska.—The No. 25 Central Washington volleyball team was unable to keep up with Seawolves as the match went five sets.
A change in momentum is all it takes, but untimely mistakes and a .103 team hitting percentage was too much to overcome against the GNAC leading Seawolves.
"We gave ourselves a chance to win here, but we couldn't match UAA offensively in the later parts of the match. We didn't have an answer for Stephens, and she more or less took over late. I love the heart and competitive spirit on this team and we will certainly need it for our next challenge in Fairbanks Saturday." CWU Head Coach
Mario Andaya said.
It was a slow first set for the Wildcats, but an error by the Seawolves and a service ace by
Laynie Erickson provided a 7-4 lead. The Seawolves hit their stride however, as a 14-1 scoring run propelled them into the lead 18-8.
Tia Andaya,
Sydney Remsberg, and
Emma Daoud-Hebert all provided kills, but it was too much to overcome as the Seawolves took set one, 25-16.
The second set began in favor of the Seawolves, but a five-point scoring run allowed the 'Cats to find the lead, 9-5. The Seawolves answered with a 5-1 scoring run to tie it up 10-10.
MacKenzy Borek and
Tia Andaya found back-to-back kills late in the set making it 18-19 still in favor of the Seawolves.
Ashley Kaufman and
Marianna Payne landed the finishing kills back-to-back, and the 'Cats won set two, 25-22.
The grudge match continued as both sides fought evenly to start the third set. The 'Cats had found their first set of consecutive points in the set with a kill from
MacKenzy Borek and a service ace by
Laynie Erickson making it 12-11 still behind the Seawolves.
The 'Cats found life with a four-point scoring run kicked off with a kill from
Ashley Kaufman, a kill from
Leanna Shymanski, and capped off with a service ace from
Sydney Remsberg. The 'Cats were in the lead, 18-15.
After back-to-back points by the Seawolves, a service error wound up giving the 'Cats the win in set three, 25-21.
Set four was the beginning of the end for the 'Cats. A 7-3 lead out of the gate gave the Seawolves what would end up being the biggest momentum shift of the night. Late in the set
Emma Daoud-Hebert provided a pair of kills alongside two singles from
Leanna Shymanski and
Tia Andaya to breathe life into the 'Cats.
A -.029 hitting percentage and 10 attack errors was too much for the 'Cats to overcome. The Seawolves took set four, 25-15.
The 'Cats were on their heels as the Seawolves took a dominating 9-2 lead to open the final set. A late set push with a kill from
Emma Daoud-Hebert and a pair of aces from
Laynie Erickson wasn't enough for the 'Cats to claw back.
The Seawolves took the final set and match, 15-10.
