Wildcats Split Opening Day with Coyotes

CALDWELL, Idaho.—Central Washington baseball (1-1, 0-0 GNAC) split their 2022 opening day doubleheader with the College of Idaho (4-2, 0-0 CC) 1-1. The Wildcats won game one, their season opener, 9-5 over the Coyotes. In game two the Coyotes bounced back taking down Central 15-3.

Saturday's win is the first time the Wildcats have won their season opener since sweeping Saint Martin's in four games in 2015.

"I thought we competed all day, and in both games," said Central Washington Head Coach Desi Storey. "We did well in all aspects of game one. Josh Touhey had an excellent outing. We struggled to throwing strikes in game two, but kept working, had good at bats, and played solid defense. We got an opportunity to get some guys in and learn going forward."

Austin Hauck had a phenomenal day in his inaugural series with the Wildcats after transferring from Hofstra University this past offseason. Hauck, a 5-10 infielder from Tulalip, Washington, went four for seven at plate through both games, tallying four hits, two doubles and a walk.

Zach Berryman, a preseason NCBWA West-Region team selection, was four for ten on the day. Berryman scored two runs, a single run batted in, and a stolen base.

Josh Touhey, the junior right-hander from San Tan Valley, Arizona, posted a 3.60 earned run average through his five innings of work today. Touhey allowed just four hits and two earned runs through 16 at-bats, striking out just one.

SCORING EFFORTS – GAME ONE
Tyler McClain and Austin Ohland had back-to-back doubles after the Wildcats put two runners on, giving Central the early 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

In the second Charlie Larson drew a leadoff walk, advancing to second on a stolen base and over to third on a throwing error by the Coyotes catcher, Dillon Danner.

Austin Hauck scored on a wild pitch in the third after reaching on a single to left field. Michael Copeland pinch ran for Ohland who reached on a double, scoring on a fielding error by the second baseman Jonah Hultberg.

McClain scored in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to the center fielder Tristian Garland after reaching on a single down the leftfield side.

Michael Peter scored on a foul ball down the right field line after reaching on a double after McClains leadoff single.

Zach Berryman scored in the sixth on a double from Adam Fahsel after reaching on a lone single to left center.

SCORING EFFORTS – GAME TWO
Tyler McClain gave the Wildcats their first score of the game in the sixth inning with a solo home run to right center.

In the eighth Adam Fahsel drew a leadoff walk, then scored on a double from Andrew Vankemseke. Vankemseke came around to score after a groundball to first moved him over to third, and a single from Ben Leid brought him home.

The Wildcats and Coyotes will face off for another double header Sunday, February 6th. First pitch is slated for 10:00 a.m. PST.
