Wildcats Slain by Saints on Day One

LACEY, Wash. – A combined 19 hits was not enough as Central Washington fell 6-5 and 12-11 to Saint Martin's in walk-off fashion in the first two of a four-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference series Friday afternoon.

The pair of losses drops the Wildcats to a 12-31 overall record and a 6-20 GNAC ledger. Saint Martin's advances to 17-26 overall and 12-14 in conference play.

"I thought we battled well all day," Central Washington Head Coach Desi Storey said. "We had good starting pitching as well as solid offense all afternoon, we just need to close the door next time."

Central Washington's offense came out hot, but was unable to keep up with the combined 27 hits the Saints manufactured across both games.

Ryan Arredondo (4-1) opened the afternoon with a strong performance on the mound in game one. The freshman led the Wildcats through 7.0 innings giving up two earned runs on five hits and one walk. Arredondo also led both side in game one with five strikeouts.

On the flipside, Austin Ohland and Adam Fahsel combined for a majority of the run support. Ohland and Fahsel combined for a single run in the third and fifth innings. In the ninth, Fahsel kicked off the duo with a bases-clearing triple followed by a sacrifice fly from Ohland to take a 5-4 lead.

The Saints would not back down, and it was Ryan Oshiro who played hero in game one. Oshiro went two-for-five in the opening game, including the game-winning two-run double. Saint Martin's took game one 6-5.

Kameron Richards (2-0) earned the win for SMU in game one, allowing two earned runs on three hits through 3.0 innings with three strikeouts.

The winning difference for the Saints in game two was scoring in all but two frames to the Wildcats four frames.

A crooked third inning that featured two doubles and a three-run home run from Fahsel propelled the Wildcats into an early 10-2 lead.

Saint Martins responded, scoring six in the fifth inning, one in the six, and two in the seventh to force the extra inning.

It was Austin Schaler with the heroic effort in game two for SMU. Schaler drove in the game-winning run on a base hit through the right side, winning game two 12-11.

Colin Driscoll (1-0) picked up the win for the Saints in game two. The southpaw struck out three and allowed just one hit through his 3.0 innings of work.

Adam Fahsel slugged his way around the ballpark throughout the day. The center fielder went three-for-eight with a three-run home run, a double, and a triple. Fahsel added a total of five runs and four runs batted in (RBI).

Cody Chavis headlined the Saints offense on day one. The junior finished the afternoon four-for-nine with a double, a solo home run, and a total of three runs and three RBI's.

The Wildcats and Saints bounce right back tomorrow, April 30th, with another doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
