Wildcats Red Hot Bats and Laver's Second One Hit Game of the Weekend Lead 'Cats to Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Central Washington softball team wrapped up their nonconference home series against Montana State Billings sweeping the day first with a 12-7 victory, followed by a 3-0 victory. 

QUOTING HEAD COACH JOE DIPETRO:

"I thought we came out focused today, in the first game offensively especially. We had a lot of quality at bats and scored often. In the second game Ashlee was fantastic! To throw back-to-back one hit shutouts say something about her! I was happy for the girls today."

GAME 1

SCORING:
  • Game one looked to follow suit with yesterdays game one as Marin Penney homered to left field in the first inning bringing Lauren Blaschak home as well as herself putting the 'Cats in the early 2-0 deficit. 
  • The Wildcats responded with a two run inning of their own in the bottom of the first as Alyssa Benthagen doubled to right field bringing Kate Hopkins home from second base, Hannah Hvitved and Myiah Seaton were able to get on base making it a bases loaded situation for MSUB when the Yellow Jackets pitcher walked Brooke Jordan brining Benthagen home for the 2-2 tie to end the first inning. 
  • The Wildcats continued to their momentum into the second inning as Allie Thiessen singled to right field bringing Makenna King home.
  • Benthagen followed suit with a single of her own into right field bringing Harlee Carpenter home. 
  • Hvitved sacrificed herself to bring Thiessen home, which Jordan did the same to bring Benthagen home the following hit making it a 7-2 game in favor of the Wildcats heading to the third inning. 
  • The Yellow Jackets responded in the top of the third as Maycen O'Neal reached first on an error allowing Blaschak to score. 
  • Jazlyn Kalehuawehe grounded out to the shortstop allowing Penney to score, which was followed by Teagan Seeton reaching on an error bringing pinch runner Marleigh Nieto home to make it a 7-6 lead in favor of the Wildcats heading to the bottom of the third. 
  • The Wildcats were determined not to let the momentum swing as Carpenter singled to center field allowing Jillian Hampson to score. 
  • Thiessen doubled to leftcenter bringing Carpenter home, and Benthagen  singled through the right side bringing Thiessen home. 
  • The Wildcats held strong and added to their lead in the fourth inning as Jordan doubled bringing Hvitved to third, but a throwing error on the center fielder brought Hvitved home. 
  • Hampson sacrificed herself to get Jordan home. 
  • The Yellow Jackets finished off the scoring as Shelby Martin homered in the sixth inning.
PITCHING:
  • Isabel Womack started the game for the Wildcats going two innings, giving up three hits, six runs, and three walks but getting two strikeouts against 13 batters. 
  • Payton Kessler finished up the final five innings for CWU allowing two hits, one run, and four walks but getting three strikeouts against 21 batters. 
  • Julia Qualteri started the game for the Yellow Jackets going two innings as well after giving up seven hits, seven runs, five earned runs, and three walks against 16 batters.
  • Shelby Martin relieved Qualteri pitching the final four innings and allowing 11 hits, five runs, but getting two strikeouts against 23 batters.
HITTING:
  • The Wildcats finished with 18 hits as Carpenter led the way with four hits, and Benthagen followed with three hits. 
  • Thiessen, Hvitved, and Hampson each had two hits, while five other Wildcats finished with one hit. 
  • Benthagan and Jordan each finished with three RBI's. 
  • The Yellow Jackets finished with five hits as Martin was the only player to nab multiple hits with two. 
GAME 2

SCORING:
  • Benthagen nabbed a single to right field allowing Hopkins to score early in the first inning. 
  • The Wildcats added some extra insurance in the fifth inning when Carpenter doubled to right center allowing Hampson to score.
  • Thiessen reached on an error from the first baseman which allowed Carpenter to score. 

PITCHING:
  • Ashlee Laver had herself another game pitching all seven innings and only allowing one hit and two walks.
  • Laver finished with seven strikeouts against 24 batters. 
  • This was Laver's second straight (back-to-back days) one hit shutout. 
  • Alyssa Etheridge pitched a complete game for MSUB allowing five hits, three runs, two earned runs, and two walks but getting six strikeouts against 25 batters. 

HITTING:
  • The Wildcats finished with five hits as Carpenter, Thiessen, Hopkins, Benthagen, and Hvitved each recorded a hit.
  • The lone hit by the Yellow Jackets came from Shelby Marquart. 

UP NEXT:
  • The Wildcats will head back on the road for a four-game series at Cal Poly Humboldt (3-11) starting on Friday at 12:00 p.m. from the Humboldt Softball Field. The series will conclude in Arcata, Calif. on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch, and both days game two will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
