Falcons Tip-Toe Past Wildcats

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University Football Team (4-2, 3-1 LSC) suffered a heart-breaking defeat at home to the defending Lone Star Conference Champions UT Permian Basin, by a 14-13 score Saturday evening.

QUOTING CWU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH CHRIS FISK

"I'm proud of the effort from our guys tonight. We have a lot of work to do on our execution in many aspects, that we will be looking forward to improving upon this week before another big game next weekend."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Wildcats came right out of the gates with a 43-yard kick return from Darrien Gaines to set the CWU offense up at the 50-yard line.
  • The 'Cats marched down the field thanks to a 10-yard rush from Cam Daniels and extra yardage from Tyler Flanagan helped set up Kennedy McGill for the 11-yard touchdown rush. Wyatt Redding added the point after touchdown to make it 7-0 CWU with 8:09 left in the first quarter.
  • UTPB took over at the CWU 40-yard line and immediately saw Jaylen Clay intercept the pass to set the 'Cats up at their own 40-yard line.
  • The Falcons defense forced the 'Cats to punt the ball giving the ball back to the UTPB offense. The Wildcat defense stiffened up and forced a three-and-out capped by a sack from Isaac Clark and Chase Loidhamer to force UTPB to punt.
  • Both teams had another possession before ending the first quarter with CWU up 7-0.
  • The Wildcats quickly saw themselves at a fourth and five attempt at the CWU 35-yard line on the second play of the second quarter. Dan Stewart connected with Tanner Volk for a nine-yard reception on a trick play to give the 'Cats the first down and keep the drive going, just to see a 25-yard field goal attempt bounce off the upright.
  • With 52 seconds left in the first half, the Wildcats marched down the field with a completion from McGill to Dairus Morrison and a six-yard rush from Flanagan set the 'Cats at the UTPB 12-yard line with fourth and four and 17 seconds left in the half. CWU took the 29-yard field goal just to see it blocked and head into halftime up 7-0.
  • The Falcons opened the second half finding big plays when they needed them to march down the field and tie things up at seven apiece after quarterback Isaac Mooring rushed in the touchdown for two yards.
  • The Wildcats immediately responded as the dynamic duo of McGill and Flanagan rushed their way down the field with McGill earning his second touchdown of the night on a 16-yard touchdown rush, however the PAT from Quinton Pacheco would be no good making it a 13-7 CWU lead with 3:01 left in the third quarter.
  • The Falcons would wind down the rest of the third quarter, continuing to march down the field, finding themselves at the CWU 34-yard line to start the final 15 minutes of play.
  • Picking up where they left off in the third quarter, the Falcons marched down the field and once again saw Mooring punch it in to give UTPB the 14-13 lead with 11:38 left.
  • The Wildcats managed to get 17 yards, but gave Stewart the opportunity to punt, giving the Falcons the ball back with 8:31 left in the game.
  • UTPB made the most of the 8:31, chewing down the clock as they found clutch catches and plays to march down the field. The Wildcat defense forced UTPB into a fourth and five field 27-yard field goal situation with 1:03 left in the game, but a running into the kicker penalty on the 'Cats gave UTPB the first down and the 14-13 victory.
