Wildcats Shutout Javelinas 31-0 in Critical LSC Game

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Central Washington University Football Team (5-2, 4-1 LSC) didn't hesitate in securing their second shutout of the season in a 31-0 victory down at Texas A&M-Kingsville (4-3, 3-2 LSC) during the Javelinas homecoming game Saturday evening.

QUOTING CWU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH CHRIS FISK

"I'm really excited and proud of the way the guys rebounded tonight. They played really well and put in a full 100 percent. I'm excited to get back to Tomlinson for homecoming to take on Midwestern State next Saturday."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Wildcats and Javelinas had a back-and-forth first quarter with each team having three possessions with a blocked field goal by TAMUK, blocked by Isaac Clark, as the closest either team got to the endzone ending the first quarter scoreless.
  • Both teams had a possession to start the second quarter with Kingsville's second possession ending in a Brycen Indell sack to give the 'Cats the ball back at their own 33-yard line.
  • One play was all Kennedy McGill needed as he connected with Darrien Gaines for the 67-yard touchdown with 6:42 left in the second quarter. Wyatt Redding converted the point after touchdown to make it 7-0 'Cats.
  • The crimson and black defense forced a three-and-out capped by a Daniel Matagi sack to force the Javelinas to punt starting CWU's next possession on the TAMUK 49-yard line.
  • A 21-yard reception by Marcus Cook from McGill, 12-yards rushing from Tyler Flanagan, and a five-yard penalty on Kingsville set the 'Cats up at the TMAUK four-yard line where McGill found Stephen Woodward for his first collegiate reception and touchdown and with the successful PAT from Redding made it 14-0 'Cats with 2:40 to go before halftime.
  • The Javelinas were driving, finding themselves at the CWU 37-yard line after a pass interference penalty on the 'Cats, but the momentum halted after Daniel Mendoza picked off Kannon Williams of Kingsville to earn the first interception of his CWU career.
  • The 'Cats ran down the final 1:14 and headed to halftime up 14-0.
  • CWU opened the second half marching down the field seeing big gains from McGill on the ground and a pass from McGill to Morrison to set the 'Cats up for true freshman Cooper Britton to kick the 27-yard field goal to make it 17-0 CWU with 8:05 left in the third quarter.
  • Another sack on third down by Matagi forced the Javelinas to punt setting CWU up at their own 37-yard line.
  • McGill immediately connected with Andrew Molloy for a 36-yard reception. The run game gook it from there with McGill and Cam Daniels running it down to the TAMUK two-yard line where McGill found Morrison for the touchdown and with the Britton PAT made it 24-0 'Cats with 42 seconds left in the third.
  • The Javelinas wound down the rest of the time to head into the fourth quarter. Matagi opened the fourth quarter with a strip sack of Williams of Kingsville and with Chase Loidhamer recovering the fumble set the 'Cats up at the TAMUK 35-yard line.
  • One play was all the crimson and black needed for the second time on the night as McGill once again connected with Gaines, this time for a 335-yard touchdown and with Britton successfully kicking the PAT made it 31-0 'Cats with 14:42 left in the game.
  • The Javelinas made it to the CWU 48-yard line but were forced to punt and give the ball back to the 'Cats with 11:36 left. The crimson and black proceeded to run down the clock to earn the 31-0 victory.
