ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University football team announced their 2024 team captains Monday evening.
The offensive captains are redshirt sophomore quarterback
Kennedy McGill and redshirt junior running back
Tyler Flanagan. The defensive captains are senior safety
Tanner Volk and junior linebacker
Brett McCalla. The special teams captain is redshirt junior
Dan Stewart.
After taking over quarterback duties last season, McGill will look to help the Wildcat offense once again after leading the team with 97 completions on 174 attempts for 1,149 yards and nine passing touchdowns. Both McGill and Flanagan will look to continue torching the ground as McGill rushed 130 times for 613 yard and four rushing touchdowns while Flanagan led CWU with 175 rushes for 1,014 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns.
Volk had a season of the ages last year highlighted by an entire NCAA-leading 13 interceptions as well as an NCAA Division II-leading 124 tackles, 64 solo, 60 assisted. He also recorded 8.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, four pass breakups, and had one interception return for a touchdown. McCalla was second on the team in tackles with 95 total, 50 solo, 45 assisted and led CWU in tackles for loss with 10.5. He recorded one sack, one interception, two quarterback hurries, two pass breakups, and one fumble recovery.
Stewart finished the 2023 season second in CWU single season history in punt yards with 2,854. He currently holds two CWU records, the CWU record for yards per punt with 55 yards per punt coming at #1 Colorado School of Mines in the playoffs, as well as the longest punt in CWU history of 76 yards also coming at #1 Mines. He finished last season with 2,854 yards on 69 punts to average 41.36 yards per punt.
The Wildcats will open their season on the road as they take on NCAA Division I FCS member, the University of San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 7 down in Southern California. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. from Torero Stadium.
