Wildcats Stampede Over Buffaloes in LSC Opener

CANYON, Texas – The Central Washington University Football Team won their first game in Lone Star Conference play and earned their first victory in Canyon with a 45-3 victory at West Texas A&M late Saturday night after a severe storm delay.

"I'm really proud of the way we have handled three consecutive road trips to start the season," CWU Head Football Coach Chris Fisk said. "I feel like we have improved every week and we are starting to find our identity as a team. We are excited to get back to Tomlinson Stadium next weekend."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The Wildcats started things off partway through the first quarter when Tyler Flanagan ran in the 12-yard touchdown paired with the Wyatt Redding point after touchdown to make it 7-0 CWU. 
  • Flanagan struck again later in the first quarter rushing in a one-yard touchdown with 2:53 left in the first quarter, and with Redding making the PAT, the Wildcats led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Tanner Volk picked up where he left off last year bringing back a 76-yard interception for a touchdown, with a Redding PAT made it 21-0 CWU. 
  • The 'Cats defense made quick work before the half giving the ball back to the offense to set up a Redding 45-yard field goal with five seconds left in the first half, making it a 24-0 CWU lead. 
  • The Wildcats struck first out of the halftime break as Camden Loidhamer caught an eight-yard pass from Kennedy McGill coupled with the Redding PAT making it 31-0 CWU with 9:41 left in the third quarter. 
  • Flanagan added on his third touchdown of the night with 1:04 left in the third quarter rushing in the seven-yard touchdown to go along with the Redding PAT making it 38-0 CWU with 1:04 left in the third quarter.
  • The Buffaloes would get on the board to start the scoring in the fourth quarter  as Preston Gregg made a 34-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 38-3 CWU. 
  • The crimson and black would strike to seal the deal in the fourth quarter as Justice Taylor drilled the eight-yard rushing touchdown with Redding drilling the PAT making it 45-3 CWU. 
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
 
  • McGill finished the game completing 10/21 for 178 yards and one passing touchdown as well as rushing for 102 yards. 
  • Caleb Christensen finished the game 1/2 for 54 yards while Justin Brennan finished the game completing his only pass of eight yards. 
  • Flanagan finished the game rushing for 104 yards and three touchdowns while Taylor rushed for 33 yards and one touchdown.
  • Jalen Grable led the 'Cats in receiving yards with 65 yards on two receptions with Ty Snider not far behind with 62 yards on also two receptions. 
  • Marcus Cook and Darrien Gaines each had three receptions for 50 and 43 yards, respectively.
  • Camden Loidhamer added 20 yards and one touchdown. 
  • Brycen Indell led the Wildcat defense with eight tackles. 
  • Wahi Emmsley added five tackles, a half tackle for loss, and a forced fumble while Chase Coalson added four tackles and a half tackle for loss. 
  • Daniel Mendoza added four tackles while Tanner Volk picked up where he left off last season with four tackles, one pass breakup, and the 'Cats first interception of the season which he returned for a 76-yard pick six. 
  • Tyler King added four tackles, a half tackle for loss, and a quarterback hurry. 
  • Jaylen Clay added a half tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry while Jalen Owens had two tackles and one pass breakup. 
  • Isaac Clark two tackles and one fumble recovery.
  • Trishion Sullivan and Dajshon Deams each had a half tackle for loss while Jeremy Banks had one pass breakup. 
  • Dan Stewart had one punt for 33 yards.
  • Wyatt Redding went 1/3 on field goal attempts making his 45-yard attempt and going 6/6 on PAT attempts. Redding also had seven kickoffs for 389 yards. 
  • Cook had two punt returns for nine yards.
 
UP NEXT
 
The 'Cats will be back at Steve Hertling Field at Tomlinson Stadium for the first time in almost a full year as they host the Western New Mexico Mustangs on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 6:00 p.m. in their second LSC game of the 2024 season.
