PREVIOUSLY FOR THE 'CATS
Central had a strong second half of the season as it enters the final week. Following a loss to Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 18, the Wildcats went on a six-winning streak that culminated in the Crimson and Blacks five-set upset over Fairbanks in the second matchup last Thursday, Nov. 13. CWU's following matchup, however, saw the 'Cats fall to Alaska Anchorage in five sets on Saturday, Nov. 15, as the Seawolves hit a four-game winning streak. The Wildcats are still leading the GNAC standing by one game with only two matches left. If Central wins one match this week, it will guarantee a share of GNAC title this season.
The Wildcats were led by
Scottie Ellsworth, who recorded 48 total kills and hitting .325, followed by
Ella Bines with 28.
Kayleigh-Shay Chang kept the offense going with 65 assists, while
Ellie Marble recorded two service aces. On the defensive side,
Brooklyn Parker locked down the defense with 62 digs for an average of 6.2 digs per set, while
Mackenzie Godden and
Kailey Willsey stood guard at the net with 13 blocks each, including two solo blocks each.
ABOUT THE VIKINGS
Western has had a strong season. After falling to Cal Poly Pomona in their first match of the season, the Vikings went on an 11-game winning streak, including a five-set victory over the Wildcats on Sep. 20. WWU lost to Saint Martin's on Oct. 4 to break its winning streak, but the Vikings responded with a 7-1 run to follow–only falling to then-No. 9 Simon Fraser. The last two matches, however, have not been fortunate to the Vikings as they fell to both Alaska Anchorage and #12 Simon Fraser, each in four sets, to fall out of first place in the GNAC standings. The Vikings are currently in a four-team tie for second place–one game behind first place CWU.
The Vikings have a huge presence on both sides of the court in Devyn Oestreich, who leads the team in kills with 333, digs with 325, and service aces with 40. Delaney Speer is another big presence for WWU with 304 kills and 283 digs, while Finnley Claeys has logged 35 service aces and 306 digs. Adele Holland leads the Vikings in assists with 468, followed by Caroline Hansen with 449 assists, while Emily Vossenkuhl guards the net with 96 total blocks.
The Wildcats and Vikings hit the court on Thursday, Nov. 20. First serve from Carver Gym is set for 7:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE RED LEAFS
Simon Fraser had a perfect start to the season in non-conference–going 6-0. The Red Leafs had a bumpy start to the conference play, though–falling to the 'Cats in the conference opener in five sets. SFU rebounded quickly and went on to go 11-1 following the match to hold the top spot in the GNAC. Then, on a road trip to the Alaskan schools, the Red Leafs' wheels fell off–falling to Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 6 2-3, then to Alaska Fairbanks 1-3 on Nov. 8. SFU was able to get back in the win column last week, though–defeating #15 Western Washington 3-1 to force a four-team tie for second place with Western, Fairbanks, and Anchorage–one game behind Central Washington.
The Red Leafs are led, offensively, by Natalie Lemoine-Sells with 292 kills, followed by Megan Hawkins with 253, while Eva Person feeds the offense with 785 assists. Hawkins also leads the service line with 42 aces. Defensively, the Red Leafs are led by Macyn Unger with 403 total digs, while Logan Remington leads at the net with 119 blocks.
The Wildcats take on the Red Leafs in the final match of the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 22. First serve from Burnaby is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
