HERE LAST WEEKEND: The Wildcats split their last series against Western Oregon on March 7 and 8. Dropping the first game on day one 4-8, the 'Cats responded with a 4-1 victory to even the series. Continuing the momentum into day two, the Crimson and Black struck early and found strong runs at the midway point to take game three 4-3. The offense was all on WOU's side for the final game, as the Wolves scored a steady amount of runs, including a four-run fifth inning to win the finale 10-4 to split the series 2-2.
The Wildcats were led by
Kellen Berg at the plate with five RBIs on three hits. Strong hitters also included
Ethan Buckley with three RBIs and nine hits, and
Kaiden Hernandez with five hits and two runs scored.
Garet Hagy led the pitching staff with a strong game two performance, pitching a complete seven-inning game, allowing only one run on three hits and a walk, while also striking out seven of 25 batters he faced.
Kyler Malnar also had a strong outing in game three, earning his first career win, while holding the Wolves to two runs on four hits, striking out two batters in five innings.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS: Saint Martin's had a fair start to its season, going 8-11 in nonconference action. However, since starting GNAC play, the Saints have gone 0-8, opening the slate against Montana State Billings and Northwest Nazarene. SMU has been outscored so far in conference play 29-73.
The Saints are currently led by Noah Albanese with a .289 batting average, while tallying 26 hits, 12 RBIs, 21 walks, and scoring 13 runs. Evan Nicol (.259 BA) and Bransyn Hong (.256 BA) are other strong hitters for the Saints currently.
On the mound, Blaze Wong leads with seven starts and a 3-3 record. Wong currently has a 4.19 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. In 38.2 innings pitched, he has allowed 29 runs (18 earned) on 41 hits, 13 walks, giving up five home runs while striking out 19 batters.
