Wildcats Take On Simon Fraser in Ellensburg

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University Softball Team will welcome Simon Fraser for a four-game series in Ellensburg this Friday and Saturday.

The Wildcats traveled to Bellingham where the Western Washington Vikings earned a weekend sweep over the 'Cats.
 
In the first game the Vikings earned the 11-2 victory. McKayla Cable, Brooke Baker, and Kayla Brusseau all logged one hit each for the 'Cats. Brusseau and Jessica Reitz-Eaton logged an RBI each. Izzy Vargas and Lizzy Turpen led the 'Cats with two drawn walks each. Alex Flohr pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing six hits, five runs with only three earned, and two walks while striking out one of 17 batters.
 
The Vikings earned the day one sweep with a walk-off 3-2 victory. Cable and Kasi Thomas led CWU with two hits each while Brusseau added one more. Thomas and Vargas each had an RBI. Baker, Thomas, and Vargas all drew one walk. Zoey Theophilus pitched all 6.2 innings allowing five hits, three runs, seven walks, and earned two strikeouts against 32 batters.
 
WWU began day two with a 5-3 victory over the 'Cats. Thomas logged two hits while Vargas and Ashlyn Cook each added one hit. Vargas had two RBI while Thomas had one RBI. Cable drew the only walk in the game for CWU. Baker pitched the first three innings allowing four hits, three runs, one walk, and earned a strikeout against 15 batters.
 
The Vikings completed the weekend sweep with a 13-5 five inning victory. Brusseau led CWU with two hits while Baker, Thomas, and Joelie Eder each added a hit. Baker led the team with two RBI while Brusseau and Eder each added one. Cable, Thomas, Vargas, Mia Flores, and Hallie Sehlin all drew one walk. Theophilus pitched the first two innings allowing seven hits, seven runs, and four walks against 17 batters.
 
SCOUTING THE RED LEAFS:
 
Simon Fraser is 8-22 on the season with a 6-2 GNAC record. They went 0-5 in Texas at the UT Tyler First Pitch Invitational before going 1-4 at the West Coast Challenge, earning their first win of the season against Cal State Monterey Bay by a 10-1 five inning score. They then took down Stanislaus State on the road by an 11-2 five inning score. They suffered a sweep at Western Washington in a nonconference doubleheader before going 0-5 at the NorCal Crossover. In a nonconference weekend at Western Oregon, the Red Leafs were swept in four tight games. Since starting GNAC play, the Leafs swept Montana State Billings by scores of 2-1, 9-1 in five innings, 9-4, and 7-4 in their home weekend debut. Last weekend they traveled to Northwest Nazarene earning a weekend split, falling 2-1 in game one before bouncing back for a 6-5 eight inning victory in game two. They then shut out the Nighthawks 4-0 in game three before falling 8-4 in the series finale.
 
Lauren Lugtigheid and Makenna Simmons lead the Leafs with batting averages of .392 and .330. Lugtigheid has 38 hits and is 16 for 19 on stolen bases this season. Simmons leads SFU with nine doubles and is tied with two triples with Grace McMillan. Cassidy Affeldt has 25 RBI and is tied with Rae Bates with 13 drawn walks each. Affeldt also leads SFU with five home runs.
 
Monica Bourque leads the Leafs pitching corps with a 2.94 ERA, a 6-11 record, 13 complete games, and one shutout in 18 appearances with 15 starts. Bourque has allowed 113 hits, 66 runs with 42 earned, 49 walks, and 83 strikeouts against 418 batters in 100 pitched innings. Emma Franklin and Avery Rust have both pitched in 13 games while making seven starts. Franklin owns a 6.18 ERA with a 1-5 record and two complete games while pitching in 45.1 innings allowing 82 hits, 49 runs with 40 earned, 13 walks, and has earned 18 strikeouts against 208 batters. Rust has a 9.47 ERA with a 1-6 record and one complete game. She's pitched in 34 innings allowing 47 hits, 50 runs with 46 earned, and 27 walks while striking out 24 of 139 batters.

The Wildcats will head back on the road next weekend when they travel to Saint Martin's. CWU and SMU clash on Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12 from Saints Field in Lacey, Wash. Day one is set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. while day two is set for noon and 2:00 p.m.
