Flores Begins Senior Weekend With Pair of Walk-Off Hits to Secure Day One Sweep

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University Softball Team held their annual Gold Star Family Games Friday afternoon to honor fallen military members and their families, honoring them with a day one sweep of the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets behind a pair of walk-off hits from senior Mia Flores.

  • Danica Butler put MSUB on the board first in the second inning with a double to left field which scored Grace Hood and made it 1-0 'Jackets.
  • The 'Jackets added on in the top of the fourth when Hood homered to center field to also score Delaney Vazquez and make it 3-0 MSUB.
  • Jessica Reitz-Eaton put the 'Cats on the board in the bottom of the fourth when she sacrificed herself to the left fielder to score Izzy Vargas which was followed by McKayla Cable singling up the middle to score Lizzy Turpen and cut it to a 3-2 MSUB lead.
  • Kayla Brusseau tied things up in the bottom of the seventh when she singled to left field to score Cable and was followed by the senior Flores who singled to left field to score Brusseau and give the 'Cats the 4-3 walk-off victory.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Cable led the 'Cats with three hits while Brusseau, Flores, Reitz-Eaton, Turpen, and Brooke Baker all added one each.
  • Cable, Brusseau, Flores, and Reitz-Eaton all had one RBI.
  • Reitz-Eaton, Melise Brown, Kasi Thomas, and Ashlyn Cook all drew one walk.
  • Hood and Marleigh Nieto led MSUB with two hits while Josie Theilen, Wynter Hurst, Destiny Villas, Alexis Tovar, and Butler all added one.
  • Hood had two RBI while Butler added one.
  • Hood drew the only walk of the game for the 'Jackets.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched all seven innings allowing nine hits, three runs, one walk, and earned five strikeouts against 28 batters.
  • Butler pitched all 6.2 innings for the Yellowjackets allowing eight hits, four runs, four walks, and also earned five strikeouts against 33 batters.
 
GAME 2:
 
SCORING:
 
  • MSUB tacked one on to begin the game when Nieto singled to left field which scored Hurst to make it 1-0 MSUB.
  • Baker tied things up in the bottom of the first with a single to center field to score Thomas.
  • The Yellowjackets took the lead once more in the second when Jillian Karsjen reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Villas to score followed by Theilen sacrificing herself to the shortstop to score Tovar and make it 3-1 MSUB.
  • In the bottom of the second, Flores scored on a throwing error by the catcher to cut it to a 3-2 MSUB lead.
  • The 'Jackets added on in the third when Villas singled to left field to score Kendall Klemp followed by Tovar singling to left field to score Hood and make it a 5-2 MSUB lead.
  • Turpen added one in the fourth for CWU when she singled up the middle to score Vargas which cut it to a 5-3 deficit for the 'Cats.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Vargas cut it to one when she singled to left field to score Brusseau and was followed by Flores doing it again with a big double to right center field to score Vargas and Jenna Markuson to make it her second walk-off hit of the day and give the 'Cats the day one sweep by a 6-5 score.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Baker and Flores led the 'Cats with two hits each while Thomas, Vargas, Reitz-Eaton, Turpen, and Joelie Eder all tacked on one.
  • Flores had two RBI while Baker, Cargas, and Turpen all had one.
  • Cable and Flores each drew one walk for CWU.
  • Nieto, Villas, and Tovar all logged two hits for MSUB while Hurst, Klemp, Hood, and Cazz Rankosky all added one.
  • Theilen, Nieto, Villas, Tovar, and Karsjen all had one RBI.
  • Nieto drew the only walk for the 'Jackets.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Alex Flohr pitched the first three innings allowing eight hits, five runs, no walks, and earned four strikeouts against 18 batters.
  • Reese Anderson pitched the next four innings allowing two hits, no runs, one walk, and earned a strikeout against 15 batters.
  • Avery Gray pitched all 6.1 innings allowing nine hits, six runs with five earned, two walks, and had two strikeouts against 33 batters.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • CWU leads the all-time series by a 62-36 margin.
  • The 'Cats are 29-11 in Ellensburg over MSUB.
  • In conference contests the crimson and black are 52-30.
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The 'Cats and 'Jackets wrap up the weekend tomorrow when they face each other for another doubleheader starting at noon.
