Wildcats Drop Pair to SFU

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University Softball Team fell in a pair of hard fought games against Simon Fraser Friday afternoon.

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Red Leafs broke the scoreless game in the fourth inning when Ella Booth sacrificed herself to the shortstop to score Grace McMillan followed by Madeline Hanson sacrificing herself to the right fielder to score Hannah Houts and make it 2-0 SFU.
  • The Wildcats responded in the fifth when Kayla Brusseau reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to score McKayla Cable followed by Kasi Thomas singling to left field to score Jadyn Holdren and finally seeing Brooke Baker single up the middle to score Thomas and Brusseau to give the 'Cats the 4-2 lead. 
  • The Leafs cut it to one in the sixth when Booth sacrificed herself to the right fielder to score Cassidy Affeldt and make it 4-3 CWU.
  • SFU earned the victory in the seventh inning when Lizzy Sugrive homered to left center field to also score Anika Janzen and give the Leafs the 5-4 victory.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Cable, Holdren, Thomas, Baker, Mia Flores, and Izzy Vargas all logged one hit each.
  • Baker had two RBI while Thomas added one.
  • Holdren drew two walks.
  • Houts and Sugrive led SFU with two walks while McMillan, Janzen, and Lauren Lugtigheid all had one hit each. 
  • Booth and Sugrive each had two RBI while Hanson added one RBI.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched all seven innings allowing seven hits, five runs with only two earned, no walks, and earned four strikeouts against 29 batters.
  • Monica Bourque pitched all seven innings allowing six hits, four runs with none of them being earned, two walks, and five strikeouts against 32 batters.
 
GAME 2:
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Red Leafs struck in the top of the first when McMillan sacrificed herself to the left fielder to score Lugtigheid followed by Booth doubling down the left field line to score Houts and make it 2-0 SFU.
  • The 'Cats responded in the bottom of the first when Thomas doubled to right center field to score Brusseau, Holdren, and Cable followed by Thomas stealing home to make it a 4-2 CWU lead after the first.
  • SFU took back the lead in the second when Janzen singled to the shortstop to score Affeldt followed by McMillan singling up the middle to score Lugtigheid and Rae Bates and make it 5-4 SFU.
  • CWU took the lead back in the bottom of the second when Cable doubled to left field to score Vargas and Melise Brown followed by Brusseau reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman to give enough time for Cable to score and make it 7-5 in favor of the 'Cats.
  • Brusseau added a home run to left field in the fourth to score Cable in the process and make it a 9-5 CWU game.
  • The Red Leafs blew the game open in the fifth inning first when Affeldt doubled to right field to score Cadence Dobranski followed by Bates doubling to left center to score Affeldt and Lugtigheid reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman to score Bates.
  • Still in the fifth, Jansen singled to left field to score Hanson followed by Houts singling to left field which scored Janszen and Lugtigheid, capped by a home run from Booth to score Houts and McMillan and make it a 14-9 SFU lead.
  • Lugtigheid added on in the sixth with a single to center field to score Alesandra Courchesne.
  • Bates added two more in the seventh with a single up the middle to score Affeldt and Abby Burgess to make it 17-9 SFU.
  • The 'Cats attempted their comeback attempt in the seventh when Flores scored on a wild pitch followed by Brown singling to score Lizzy Turpen but the Red Leafs earned the 17-11 victory.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Cable led CWU with three hits while Brusseau, Turpen, and Brown all added two. Holdren, Thomas, and Vargas each added one hit.
  • Bruseau and Thomas had three RBI while Cable had two and Brown added one.
  • Flores drew two walks while Baker and Brown each drew one.
  • Lugtigheid, Janzen, Booth, Affeldt, and Bates all had three hits while Houts, Sugrive, and Hanson each added one.
  • Booth had four RBI while Bates and McMillan added three. Janzen and Houts had two RBI while Lugtigheid and Affeldt each had one.
  • Lugtigheid, McMillan, Affeldt, and Hanson all drew one walk. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Baker pitched the first 1.1 innings allowing four hits, five runs with four earned, and two walks against 11 batters.
  • Alex Flohr pitched the next 2.2 innings allowing two hits, no runs, and no walks against 10 batters.
  • Ellie Gilbert pitched the next 0.2 innings allowing six hits, eight runs with two earned, and one walk against 10 batters.
  • Reese Anderson pitched the next 1.2 innings allowing eight hits, four runs, and one walk while striking out three of 14 batters.
  • Olivia Ross pitched the final 0.2 innings allowing no hits, no runs, and no walks against two batters.
  • Avery Rust pitched 3.2 innings for SFU allowing eight hits, nine runs with eight earned, two walks, and earned three strikeouts against 21 batters.
  • Emma Franklin pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing four hits, two runs, two walks, and earned a strikeout against 16 batters.
