Box Score vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills
TURLOCK, Calif. (Feb. 5) -- The Central Washington University softball team had 10 hits combined in its two games, but the Wildcats were unable to push across a run in falling twice on the opening day of the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational at Pedretti Park on Friday. The Wildcats fell to UC San Diego, 2-0, and Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-0.
The games were the season openers for the Wildcats, who are 0-2. UC San Diego finished the opening day of the tournament with a 1-1 record, while Cal State Dominguez Hills is now 2-0.
In the opener, the Central offense mustered just three hits, spoiling a strong pitching debut from junior
Lauren Hadenfeld (Vancouver/Evergreen HS). Hadenfeld struck out seven in five innings of work but surrendered both runs including an unearned tally in the opening inning.
UC San Diego also scored a single run in the second inning, with the Tritons' final tally of the game scoring on a wild pitch.
CWU had its best scoring chance in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore catcher
Meghan Kopczynski (Ellensburg) led off with a single, and senior
Ashley Fix (Puyallup) followed with a double two batters later to put a pair of runners in scoring position. However, UCSD pitcher Camille Gaito induced a pair of infield outs to preserve the shutout.
Sophomore
Molly Coppinger (Belfair/North Mason HS), who made three diving plays defensively, had Central's other hit in the game -- a second-inning single.
Kris Lesovsky led all players with a three-hit game for UC San Diego.
In the final game of the day against Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Wildcats matched the Toros with seven hits as a team but again were unable to score a run.
CSUDH scored once in the third and twice in the fifth, as the Toros pieced together four hits in the fifth to extend their lead.
Central's best scoring chance came in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Fix walked and consecutive singles by pinch-hitter
Carrina Wagner (Tacoma/Spanaway Lake HS) and
Danielle Monson (Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck HS) loaded the bases, but
Taylor Trautmann (Renton/John F. Kennedy HS) lined a bullet to third base and Monson was doubled off first base to end the game.
Monson was the only Wildcat player with more than one hit in Friday's nightcap, going 2 for 3. Five others had one hit each for Central.
Katie Garcia and Amber Angel were both 2 for 2 for Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Central Washington is scheduled to continue tournament play on Saturday with games against Sonoma State and 11th-ranked Humboldt State.
