LACEY (Mar. 26) -- Junior left-hander
Ryan Hastings (Lynden) allowed just two runs over six innings in his start, but the Central Washington University baseball team was unable to back him with offensive support in falling to Saint Martin's University, 2-0, in game two of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday at the Regional Athletic Complex. The Wildcats also dropped the opener, 5-1, to fall to 6-14 overall and 1-9 in GNAC play.
Hastings' start, which was his first outing in two weeks and his first start since Mar. 6, saw Saint Martin's collect just two runs on seven hits. Both of those tallies came in the first inning, as consecutive RBI doubles by Aaron Johnson and Travis Jones gave the host Saints (14-13, 11-3 GNAC) a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats had offensive struggles in the game, managing just two hits against Thomas DeBoer and Kaleb Wilson. Those hits were a second-inning single by junior
Chaz Ocbina (Tacoma/Wilson HS) and a third-inning single by senior
Kelly Gau (Woodinville), but despite getting a pair of runners on base in the both the second and fourth innings, CWU was unable to score against the Saints in the finale of the twinbill.
In game one, Central Washington fell behind 3-0 after three innings of play, and tallied its only run of the afternoon in the top of the sixth inning on junior
Brady Kincannon's (Federal Way/Decatur HS) solo home run to left field.
The Wildcats had at least one baserunner in seven of the nine innings of the opener, but grounded into double plays three times to thwart any potential rallies in those frames.
Saint Martin's scored twice in the first, and once each in the third, sixth, and eighth against the combination of starter
Brandon Rohde (Gig Harbor) and reliever
Palmer Brown (Sacramento, Calif./Rio Americano HS). Rohde, who threw 2 2/3 innings of relief in Tuesday's non-conference loss to Whitworth, struck out six without a walk on Saturday against the Saints but suffered the loss after seven innings of work to fall to 1-2 on the season.
Offensively, CWU had two players -- senior
Nate Wallen (Bremerton/Central Kitsap HS) and junior
Glen Reser (Spokane/Mead HS) -- with a pair of hits. Andrew Elke was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases for Saint Martin's, which totaled 10 hits in the contest.
The two teams are scheduled to wrap up their four-game weekend series on Sunday at noon, again playing at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey. Central Washington is then scheduled to return home next weekend for a four-game series against Montana State University Billings on Friday (Apr. 1) and Saturday (Apr. 2).
