TURLOCK, Calif. (Apr. 1) -- Senior pitcher Lauren Hadenfeld (Vancouver/Evergreen HS) tied a career-high with 14 strikeouts, but the Central Washington University softball team was unable to do much offensively in dropping a pair of games at the 10th annual Tournament of Champions, presented by Mizuno, on Friday at Pedretti Park. The Wildcats fell to San Francisco State University, 8-4, and to Sonoma State University, 5-1.
CWU fell to 9-10 on the season with Friday's two losses.
Hadenfeld, whose previous career-high of 14 Ks also came at Pedretti Park against California State University, Monterey Bay in last year's tournament, fanned 14 Sonoma State hitters but allowed nine hits and four earned runs in falling to 7-6 on the season. She also threw 2 2/3 innings of relief in the day's opening game against SF State.
Central Washington managed just seven hits combined in the two games on Friday, collecting four hits and four runs against the Gators before totaling just three safeties against Sonoma State.
Against SF State, the Wildcats scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the second before watching the Gators score seven runs combined between the fourth and sixth innings. CWU scratched across a run in the fifth on a RBI single by senior Samantha Petrich (Chehalis/W.F. West HS) and in the sixth on a run-scoring hit by sophomore Carrina Wagner (Tacoma/Spanaway Lake HS).
Petrich went 2 for 3 against San Francisco State, while Wagner and senior Keilani Cruz (Tacoma/Curtis HS) also had hits. Alyssa Esquibel was one of three Gators with two hits, driving in three.
In the final game of the night against Sonoma State, Hadenfeld allowed three runs in the first and two more in the third, and the Wildcat offense was never able to catch the Seawolves in the four-run loss.
Hadenfeld finished two strikeouts shy of the school record against SSU, and walked just two.
Central scored its only run of the nightcap in the second inning, after senior Kelsey Haupert (Olympia/Black Hills HS) led off with a single but advanced two bases on an error. Two batters later, junior Molly Coppinger (Belfair/North Mason HS) scored Haupert with a RBI single, but despite consecutive walks to sophomore Elena Carter (Olympia/Black Hills HS) and junior Natasha Wood (Graham/Graham-Kapowsin HS), the Wildcats were unable to close the deficit.
Kayla Ledford and Skylynn Myers each went 2 for 4 offensively for Sonoma State.
Central Washington will play three games on Saturday to wrap up pool play. The Wildcats face Cal State East Bay at 1:30 p.m., followed by consecutive games against Humboldt State and Cal State Dominguez Hills at 6:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., respectively.
