Wildcat Baseball Sweeps MSU Billings in Season-Ending Doubleheader

CWU Offense Erupts to Score 18 Runs in Opener

BILLINGS, Mont. (May 7) -- Central Washington University senior Eric Sorensen (Kittitas) was 4 for 5 in game one with a career-high six RBI to lead the Wildcat baseball team to an 18-5 victory over Montana State University Billings at Dehler Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats then won the nightcap, 5-3, with junior pitcher Brandon Rohde (Gig Harbor) picking up his second win of the season, as the Wildcats ended their 2011 campaign with its first doubleheader sweep of a conference opponent.

CWU finished its 2011 season with a 14-32 overall record and a 7-25 Great Northwest Athletic Conference mark. MSU Billings is 18-25 overall and 9-19 in GNAC play with one series remaining in its season.

The Wildcat offense scored 16 runs in the first four innings of game one to gain a healthy 16-0 lead. CWU scored two more runs in the seventh inning to increase its advantage to 18 before MSUB added five runs in the final three innings.

Central scored seven runs in the second inning on eight hits, with the first five batters of the inning recording safeties. Sorensen highlighted the inning with four RBI on a two-run home run and a two-run single that scored senior Kris Henderson (Liberty Lake/Central Valley HS) and junior Glen Reser (Spokane/Mead HS).

The offensive onslaught continued in the following inning, as CWU scored five runs. Junior Derrick Webb (Ephrata) had a run-scoring single, while Reser and Sorensen each drove in a pair of runs on a single and double, respectively. Reser finished game one with five RBI on three hits.

The Wildcats totaled 20 hits in the contest, with seven players having two or more hits.

Senior pitcher Jake Millbauer (Kennewick/Kamiakin HS) picked up his third win of the season (3-5), throwing eight innings and scattering nine hits. He allowed five runs, of which just three were earned, while striking out four without a walk.

Central Washington scored all five of its game-two runs in the first two innings as Henderson, senior Kelly Gau (Woodinville), and sophomore Jimmy Ryerson (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) each drove in a run, while junior Chaz Ocbina (Tacoma/Wilson HS) had two RBI on a pair of sacrifice flies to give the Wildcats an early 5-1 lead. The Yellowjackets scored two runs in the third inning to get within two runs of CWU, but Rohde held the MSUB bats hitless over the final four innings to preserve the win.

Rohde surrendered three runs on seven hits while fanning six batters to earn his first victory since Feb. 18, ending a drought of six straight losing decisions.

Sorensen picked up two more hits in game two to give him six hits and six RBI on the day. Coming into the doubleheader, the left-handed-hitting senior had just three hits and one RBI on the season.

CWU outhit MSUB by a 32-16 count in the twinbill, including 13 extra-base hits.

Montana State Billings outfielder Jeff Ridgeway accumulated four hits on the day including a triple and a double, scoring three runs and driving in one.
