ELLENSBURG (Mar. 17) -- Senior Kyle Long (Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway HS) threw a complete-game shutout for the Central Washington University baseball team, leading the Wildcats to a 2-0 win over Saint Martin's University to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Saints on Saturday afternoon at the CWU Baseball Field. CWU won the opener, 11-5.

The Wildcats improved to 6-8 on the season and opened Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 record for the first time since joining the conference in 2002. Saint Martin's fell to 7-17 and 3-3 in the GNAC.

Long (1-2) threw all seven innings of game two, surrendering just four hits -- two of which came in the top of the seventh inning -- while walking just one batter and striking out six.

Senior shortstop Brady Kincannon (Federal Way/Decatur HS) drove in both Central Washington runs in game two, first on a double in the in the first inning, and later on a RBI single in the third inning.

Saint Martin's made things interesting in the final inning, as the first three batters of the inning reached safely to load the bases with no out. However, Long struck out the next two hitters he faced, and then fielded a comebacker to the mound to end the game.

In game one, the Wildcats built a 9-0 lead through six innings en route to the six-run victory. Central Washington starting pitcher Brandon Rohde (Sr., Gig Harbor) picked up the win, throwing seven innings and giving up three runs on five hits. Rohde, who finished with seven strikeouts and improved to 3-1 on the season, took a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning before a three-run home run by Chandler Tracy ruined the shutout bid.

CWU leadoff hitter Brett Bielec (Sr., Port Orchard/North Mason HS) was 2 for 5 in the opener, delivering a double and a two-run triple. Junior Kyle Sani (Kennewick/Southridge HS) and Kincannon both went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs, and senior David Leid (Carson City, Nev./Carson HS) also drove in two runs on his only hit of the game, a third-inning double. A total of five Wildcats had two hits in game one, as sophomore Ethan Sterkel (Ellensburg) was 2 for 4 and junior Jimmy Ryerson (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) was 2 for 3 with a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Central Washington outhit the Saints 13-7 in game one, with eight of the Wildcats' nine starting batters recording a hit, and they were error-free defensively while Saint Martin's had two miscues in the opener.

Kincannon, Sterkel and Sani all totaled four hits on the day, with Kincannon driving in a team-best four runs in the doubleheader.

Tracy finished the day 2 for 7 for the Saints, while Zach Leonard and Mario Sanelli totaled two hits apiece for the Saints.

The two teams will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday, with a noon doubleheader scheduled at the CWU Baseball Field.
