BURNABY, B.C. (Mar. 24) -- Senior Bre Thomas (Vancouver/Columbia River HS) had the lone hit for Central Washington University in game one, and was 1 for 2 in game two, but the Wildcat team managed just five hits over 12 innings at the plate in falling to host Simon Fraser University, 12-1 and 3-1, on Saturday at Beedie Field.

The losses dropped the Wildcats to 8-12 overall and 7-8 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. Simon Fraser, in its second season as a member of the GNAC and provision member of the NCAA Division II, improved to 16-7 overall and 12-6 in the conference.

Thomas, the Wildcats' center fielder and lead-off hitter, broke up a no-hit bid by Cara Lukawesky with two out in the top of the fifth inning of game one. She also broke up the shutout in the process, as she drove in junior pinch-runner Kyleen Sweepe (North Bend/Mount Si HS) with her hit up the middle.

While the CWU offense struggled in game one, Simon Fraser collected nine hits and walked five times against two Wildcat pitchers in just four innings at the plate as it built a 12-0 lead. Six of the nine hits surrendered by CWU pitching were for extra bases, as the Clan collected three doubles and three home runs in the contest. Sammie Olexa had two of those extra-base hits and four runs batted in, while Leah Riske drove in three more runs with her two hits.

In game two, freshman Heidy Wells (Tacoma/Stadium HS) kept the Wildcats in the game with her bat and with her arm, but two Simon Fraser runs in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and enabled the Clan to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Wells had two of Central Washington's four hits in the game -- both singles -- as she became the first Wildcat pitcher with an official at-bat since 2008. In the pitching circle, she scattered seven hits, although four of those came in the decisive fifth inning when SFU scored its eventual winning and insurance runs.

Each team scored once in the third inning, with the Wildcats scoring their run on a squeeze bunt by senior Molly Coppinger (Belfair/North Mason HS) for a 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived, though, as Simon Fraser tied the game after consecutive passed balls in the bottom of the inning.

Wells finished as the lone player on either team with more than one hit in the nightcap, as she was joined by Thomas and junior Elena Carter (Olympia/Black Hills HS) with hits for the Wildcats. Seven different SFU players finished with hits, including doubles by Olexa and Trisha Bouchard.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday. CWU will then stay on the road for a Monday doubleheader at Western Washington University before embarking on its annual trip to the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., next weekend.
