SPOKANE (Apr. 10) -- Three pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout in game one, but the Central Washington University baseball team had the tables turned in game two as the Wildcats split a non-conference doubleheader with Whitworth University on Tuesday afternoon at Merkel Field. CWU won the opener, 13-0, before dropping the nightcap, 12-1.

Central Washington is now 12-18 overall on the season and won the season series with Whitworth (18-11-1), three games to one. The Wildcats swept the Pirates in a doubleheader at Ellensburg on Mar. 4.

Senior KYLE LONG (Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway HS) threw seven scoreless innings in the opener, and relievers DREW DAVIDSON (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) and DEREN JONES (Lewiston, Idaho) threw one scoreless inning of relief as the Wildcats cruised past the Pirates.

Long, who evened his season record to 3-3 and lowered his earned-run average to 4.04, had just two strikeouts but did not walk a batter. He was aided by a 10-run outburst from the CWU offense over the middle three innings, and left the game with a 13-0 lead. Davidson struck out one and allowed a hit in the eighth before Jones threw the ninth, allowing just a hit batsman.

All nine starters in the Wildcat lineup had at least one hit, with three hits each from senior BRADY KINCANNON (Federal Way/Decatur HS) and sophomore ETHAN STERKEL (Ellensburg). Sterkel and junior KYLE SANI (Kennewick/Southridge HS) both homered and drove in three runs in the game, while senior first baseman DERRICK WEBB (Ephrata) was just 1 for 4 but scored four runs. CWU finished with a 15-5 hits advantage.

In game two, senior GLEN RESER (Spokane/Mead HS) had two hits in four at-bats -- both for extra bases -- including a solo home run in the fifth inning to break the Pirates' shutout and make it a 2-1 score at the time. However, Whitworth scored 10 runs over its next three half-innings at the plate, including a six-run fifth inning, en route to its 11-run victory.

Central Washington will return home for a four-game non-conference series this weekend versus Corban University (Ore.). The Wildcats and Warriors will play twice each on Friday (Apr. 13) and Saturday (Apr. 14), with Friday's doubleheader scheduled for noon and Saturday's at 11 a.m.
