ELLENSBURG (May 4) -- Senior DAVID LEID (Carson City, Nev./Carson HS) and junior KYLE SANI (Kennewick/Southridge HS) each hit home runs in the Central Washington University baseball team's doubleheader against Montana State University Billings on Friday, but the Wildcats lost twice to the Yellowjackets by scores of 6-2 and 7-5 at the CWU Baseball Field. The second game, scheduled for seven innings, lasted nine innings.

The Wildcats, who have lost nine of their last 10 games overall, fell to 16-28 on the season and 8-18 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, while the Yellowjackets improved to 21-19 and 12-14 in the GNAC.

Leid provided Central Washington's only two runs of the opener, blasting a two-run home run to right field in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2. Montana State Billings regained the lead with a four-run fifth inning, which proved to be the difference as neither team scored the rest of the way.

CWU reliever DREW DAVIDSON (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) pitched the final 4 1/3 innings for the Wildcats, allowing only two hits while striking out seven batters without surrendering a run.

Leid was 3 for 4 in game one as the Wildcats were outhit, 13-7.

Central Washington jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning of game two, thanks to a three-run home run to left-center field by Sani, his sixth of the season. The Wildcats then pushed the lead to 4-1 after three innings, as Leid drove home a run on a groundout in the bottom half of the third, but MSUB answered by scoring once in the fourth inning and twice in the sixth to force extra innings.

After both teams went scoreless in the eighth inning, the Yellowjackets scored three runs (only one earned) in the top of the ninth inning to take a 7-4 lead. The Wildcats rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run on a MSUB error, and had the tying run on first base with two outs, but were unable to continue the inning after senior BRADY KINCANNON (Federal Way/Decatur HS) grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Senior DERRICK WEBB (Ephrata) was 3 for 3 in game two and scored on Sani's home run, while fellow senior GLEN RESER (Spokane/Mead HS) also had a multi-hit game, going 2 for 4.

Montana State Billings had four players with multiple hits in game two, led by Brody Miller, who was 3 for 5.

The Yellowjackets, who came into Friday's doubleheader hitting just .258 on the season, held a slight 12-10 hitting advantage in the nightcap and took advantage of four CWU errors that led to four unearned runs.

Game two starting pitcher JASON LOTZER (Lynnwood) left with a no-decision after scattering nine hits and just two earned runs (four total) over 6 2/3 innings of work.

The two teams will wrap up their season series on Saturday with another doubleheader, which will be Senior Day for Central Washington in its final home games of the 2012 season.
