HTML Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
MONMOUTH, Ore. (Mar. 30) -- Sophomore
Kasey Bielec (Port Orchard/North Mason HS) went 5 for 5 with four runs scored, and senior
Daniel Kathman (Roy/Eatonville HS) added three doubles and five RBI as the Central Washington University baseball team rallied to defeat Western Oregon University, 13-10, in game two of its Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. WOU won the opener, 1-0, in 10 innings.
The Wildcats finished their four-game series against the Wolves with a 2-2 split after dividing a pair of games on Friday in Monmouth. Both teams are now 17-13 overall, with WOU (12-4 GNAC) holding a one-game lead over CWU (11-5 GNAC) in the conference standings at the midway point of the season.
GAME ONE: Western Oregon 1, CWU 0
A two-out throwing error in the bottom of the 10th inning opened the door for Western Oregon to score the game's only run, spoiling a combined three-hit outing by two CWU pitchers as the hosts won, 1-0.
Junior starter
Stuart Fewel (Portland, Ore./Wilson HS) and junior reliever
Willie Davies (Shoreline/Shorecrest HS) limited the Wolves to just the three hits while extending the Wildcats' shutout streak to 18 innings. However, Blake Miller reached on an error, stole second, and scored two batters later when Tim Rausch doubled to right-center field to give WOU the victory.
CWU finished with seven hits in the 10-inning contest, and had a chance to score the game's first run in the late innings. The Wildcats left two runners in scoring position in the eighth after getting to that point with just one out, and they had runners at the corners with one out in the ninth but were unable to score.
Fewel allowed just one hit and struck out six over 5 1/3 innings, but was relieved by Davies after throwing 101 pitches and walking four. Davies did not allow a hit in his relief appearance until a one-out single by Miller in the eighth.
Freshman
Kramer Ferrell (Ellensburg), who has reached base safely in 17 consecutive games, had a 2-for-4 performance in the opener. Five others had one hit each for the Wildcats.
Taylor Hetrick earned the win in relief for WOU, throwing the final 1 2/3 innings. Starter AJ Burke struck out nine in 8 1/3 innings of work.
GAME TWO: CWU 13, Western Oregon 10
The Wildcats scored 11 runs in the final three innings, overcoming an early 5-2 deficit and salvaging a split of both the doubleheader and the four-game series.
Bielec established career-highs with the five hits and four runs scored, doubling twice in the contest. Three of his hits came in the final three innings, including a RBI double in the seventh that helped provide CWU with some late insurance runs.
Kathman, meanwhile, was also a key offensive threat for the Wildcats with his 3 for 5 outing and five RBI. He doubled in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, driving in a pair of runs on each of his final two two-base hits, while also plating a run in the first inning on a fielder's choice.
CWU fell behind 4-2 after two innings, and Western Oregon made it a 5-2 count after a run in the third. The Wildcats began their rally in the fifth, scoring four times on six hits in the inning to take a 6-5 lead. The margin then reached 10-5 after a four-run top of the sixth, but WOU scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a two-run margin heading into the final inning.
In the seventh, Bielec had a RBI double and sophomore
Mike Davalos (Apache Junction, Ariz.) had a RBI bunt single two batters later to make it a four-run differential. Junior
Joel Johnson (Olympia) then provided the Wildcats with their final run of the game on a bases-loaded walk.
Western Oregon managed two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and had the tying run at the plate, but junior
Stinson Ott (Richland) earned his first save of the season after inducing fly outs on consecutive pitches. Sophomore
Davis Engel (Ellensburg) was credited with the win after four innings of relief.
Bielec and Kathman spearheaded the Wildcats' season-best 18-hit attack, with Johnson and senior
Marc Garza (Othello) also collecting three hits. Ferrell added a 2 for 4 outing with three runs scored.
Miller went 4 for 5 for the Wolves, while Matt Nylen added a triple and three RBI.
CWU returns home for its next eight games, beginning with a four-game conference series against Northwest Nazarene University on Apr. 8-9.
