TURLOCK, Calif. (Apr. 5) -- Sophomore Heidy Wells (Tacoma/Stadium HS) pitched 6 1/3 innings of relief en route to a 7-5 victory over Cal State San Bernardino and threw a complete game against Chico State as the Central Washington University softball team won two of three in the opening day of the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno.

The pair of wins allowed the Wildcats to improve to 14-12.

GAME ONE: CWU 7, CSU San Bernardino 5
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead on an RBI double from junior Jill McDaniels (Walla Walla) and a RBI triple by junior Maikala Galusha (Battle Ground), Cal State San Bernardino struck for five runs in the bottom of the first and chased senior starter Kimberly Kocik (Mukilteo/Kamiak HS) after just two-thirds of an inning.

In the third inning, CWU displayed plate discipline by taking advantage of CSUSB (11-27) starter Kacey Cota, who struggled with her command. A fielding error and a wild pitch allowed freshman Alexa Olague (Tacoma/Woodrow Wilson HS) to score on a Galusha single and from there the Wildcats quickly evened the score at 5-5.

Another extra-base hit from Galusha and a single by Andrea Hamada (Walla Walla) put the Wildcats ahead for good in the fourth.

Wells earned her fifth win and escaped trouble in the fourth inning by stranding a pair after issuing a leadoff walk.

The Wildcats compiled 11 hits, with Galusha finishing a home run shy of the cycle as she went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

GAME TWO: Humboldt State 2, CWU 1 (8)
The Wildcats held ninth-ranked Humboldt State to just one earned run and kept the Division II national home run leaders without a long ball, but fell in extra innings to the Lumberjacks, 2-1.

Junior pitcher Maria Gau (Woodinville) loaded the bases to begin the game but worked out of the jam unscathed. She allowed a run in the third when designated player Hannah Williams recorded one of her two hits for an RBI.

The Wildcats evened the score at 1-1 in the fourth with their only run of the game, an Olague solo home run to left field -- her second of the season.

Humboldt State manufactured a run in the eighth, aided by the international tiebreaker rule. Pinch-runner Carly Perkins advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and came home on Julie Pena's single to right center.

CWU had just two hits in the game, with senior Elena Carter (Olympia/Black Hills HS) adding a one-out single in the third inning. HSU finished with 10 hits -- nine of which were singles.

GAME THREE: CWU 6, Chico State 2
Carter went 3 for 4, including a three-run home run in the seventh that gave the Wildcats some insurance, as CWU defeated Chico State, 6-2.

In addition to Carter's three-RBI outing, McDaniels drove in three runs -- two on a third-inning double and the third on a seventh-inning single.

Wells earned her sixth win of the season with the complete-game effort as CWU came out victorious in the match of the Wildcats. She scattered seven hits, issued just one walk, and struck out two.

CWU, which has won 14 of its last 18, will face Cal State Monterey Bay and Academy of Art University on Saturday in day two of the Tournament of Champions.
