ELLENSBURG, Wash (Oct. 18) – The Central Washington University senior libero
Kaely Kight became the school's career leader in digs Saturday night against Saint Martin's University, as the volleyball team swept its fourth-straight opponent completing a perfect four-game homestand.
"Kaely's career so far has been phenomenal," CWU Head Coach
Mario Andaya said about the digs leader. "We knew she would eventually break the record and we are really happy for her, and happy she was able to accomplish this feat in front of her family and our home crowd."
Kight came into the game needing 11 digs to become the school's all-time dig leader and it came quickly as she recorded the record-setting dig early in the second set. Her 22 digs in the contest now give her a total of 1786 in her career.
"It is a great honor to have the record," Kight said. "My coaches and teammates have been really supportive and this week and have been cheering me on, I couldn't be more happy."
With the win CWU improves to 14-5 on the season and 7-4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The Saints fall to 4-19 on the season and 1-10 in the GNAC
The Wildcats won the first set 25-18 behind the steady hitting of
Linden Firethorne and
Julie Hulbert. The duo combined to hit .600 with three kills apiece.
Set two brought the most excitement of the night. In addition to Kight breaking the record, the Wildcats came back from being down 18-13 to rattle off 8 straight points behind strong serving from
Lindsey Milner and a pair of kills from Firethorne and
Kaitlin Quirk en route to a 25-20 set victory.
"Kaitlin works so hard, she has been there before," Andaya explained. "She give us that composure that we need in those situations and we rely on that for her."
The Wildcats ran away with the final set winning the frame 25-11. Milner's powerful jump serve again proved fruitful for the Wildcats going on a 7-0 and building a commanding 20-9 lead.
Firethorne led the Wildcats with 11 kills followed by Quirk and
Jordan Deming who had 7 and 6 respectively. Deming also totaled 18 digs on the night, trailing only Kight who had a game-high 22.
Next up the Wildcats will take their winning streak to Alaska next week as they take on Alaska Anchorage University and the University of Alaska on Oct. 23 and 25.
