CWU Softball Earns Split with Holy Names

Wildcats Suffer First Blemish of 2014 Season

Maria Gau Improved to 3-0 on the Season
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MORAGA, Calif. (Feb. 21) --The Central Washington University softball team split its doubleheader with Holy Names University, winning game one 6-1 and losing the nightcap 4-3.  The game two loss becomes CWU's first of the season and they now stand with a 6-1 record.

Game One
MARIA GAU (Woodinville HS) improved her pitching record to 3-0 on the season as she started game one and gave up just one run through seven innings of work.  The senior scattered seven hits, striking out six batters and walking just two.

"Maria was a workhorse for us today." CWU head coach Mallory Holtman-Fletcher said. "She did awesome and was on point with her best pitch which was evident from the first inning on."

Central Washington outfielder SAMMY MORRIS (Bothell HS) was 2-for-2 in game one and drove in a runner with an RBI single up the middle in the fourth inning.  JILL MCDANIELS (Walla Walla) also contributed to the Wildcat's offensive attack with a run scoring double in the third inning where the Wildcats added three runs.

"We came out strong and aggressive right away." Holtman-Fletcher explained.  "Sammy (Morris) always finds a way to get things done and Jill (McDaniels) is just Jill, she puts the ball in play and puts it in play hard."

Game Two
KIANA WOOD (Aloha, OR/Aloha HS) totaled nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work, but she surrendered five walks, that last of which scored the winning run for Holy Names who loaded the bases in the seventh inning and scored the winning run on the free pass.  Wood gave up four total runs, but just two were earned as the Wildcats had two crucial miscues defensively that led to runs for Holy Names.

"We struggled in certain areas and our other areas didn't pick up the slack." Holtman-Fletcher said. " We didn't adjust well and they played very well defensively.  This was a good wake up call for us because all good teams need reality check and we definitely got that today."

The loss was Wood's first of the season (3-1), but she still holds an ERA of 1.15 and  has 29 strikeouts in 31.1 innings of work.

Central Washington was only able to compile four hits in the contest as REMY BRADLEY (Hanford HS), KAILYN CAMPBELL (Cedarcrest HS), ALEXA OLAGUE (Wilson HS) and MAIKALA GALUSHA (Battle Ground HS) slugged their way on base with Olague crushing a double to lead off the third inning.

The third inning was the most productive for CWU as they scored two runs in the frame; one on a RBI single by Bradley and the other on a HNU error that plated MICHAELA HAZLETT (Purcell, OK/Purcell HS).

The Wildcats will continue their California road trip with a doubleheader against Dominican University tomorrow (Feb. 22) starting at Noon.
