Hamada's Extra Inning Heroics Lead CWU Softball to Split with SMU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LACEY, Wash. (Mar. 22) – Central Washington University sophomore Andrea Hamada (Walla Walla, WA, Walla Walla) smashed her second homerun of the season in the eighth inning of the softball teams doubleheader with Saint Martin's University to give the Wildcats a 4-3 extra innings victory in game one.  The Saint's won game two by a score of 5-2.

Central Washington is now 14-7 on the season and 7-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.  Saint Martin's stands with a 12-12 record, 7-3 in the GNAC.

With game one tied at 3-3, Hamada led off the extra frame and belted a homerun to left field, which was her only hit of the contest, to give the Wildcats the 4-3 victory in extra innings.

Maria Gau (Woodinville, WA, Woodinville) started on the mound for the Wildcats and struck out 11 batters in her eight innings of work, giving up three runs on eight hits while walking just two batters earning her seventh win of the season (7-3).

Saint Marin's had a 3-0 lead though five innings in the opener, but the resilient Wildcats fought back by scoring three runs in the top half of the sixth inning to tie the score.

Maikala Galusha (Battle Ground, WA, Battle Ground) and Jill McDaniels (Walla Walla, WA, Walla Walla) led off the sixth inning with back-to-back singles, and Kailyn Campbell (Duvall, WA, Cedarcrest) followed with a double down the left field line scoring Galusha.  The Wildcats scored their final two runs of the inning on a fielder's choice by Alexa Olague (Tacoma, WA, Woodrow Wilson) and a ground out by Alyssa Egan (Monroe, WA, Monroe).

Game two started out rough for CWU as Egan started on the mound and gave up all five of the Saints runs in game two in the first inning.  Gau pitched in relief for the Wildcats and held the Saints scoreless through five and two-thirds innings giving up just four hits and three walks while striking out four batters.

The Wildcats did strike first in the nightcap with McDaniels driving home Remy Bradley (Richland, WA, Hanford) in the first inning, but the 5-1 deficit was proved too much for CWU.  The Wildcats scored their second run of the contest in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Campbell plating Taylor Ferleman (Bellevue, WA, Lake Washington).

Saint Martin's pitcher Sam Munger, who also pitched in game one, earned the victory in game two giving up just four hits.  She was also 2-for-4 in the contest with two RBI.

Central Washington will return to action tomorrow as they travel to Monmouth, Ore. to take on Western Oregon in another doubleheader starting at Noon.
