CWU softball doubles up Western Oregon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Apr. 12) -- Central Washington University seniors Maria Gau (Woodinville, WA, Woodinville) and Jill McDaniels (Walla Walla, WA, Walla Walla) powered the softball team to a sweep conference leading Western Oregon Saturday afternoon at Gary and Bobbi Frederick Field.

It was the 6th annual ALS fundraiser in honor of the late Bobbi Frederick, and Gau and McDaniels made sure it would be a memorable one.  McDaniels went 4-for-6 with a homerun in each game driving in a total of five runs on the day.  Gau got the win in game one and pitched in relief in the nightcap and picked up her 13th win of the season.

Game One: CWU 8, WOU 0 –Five innings

McDaniels got the scoring started with her first homerun of the day in the second inning as her ball cleared the left field wall scoring Jill McDaniels (Walla Walla, WA, Walla Walla) on the play.  The very next inning CWU (23-14, 12-6 GNAC) scored three runs on RBI singles by McDaniels and Austin Wilkerson (Ferndale, WA, Sehome), and Sammy Morris (Bothell, WA, Bothell) scored on a wild pitch to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead.

Gau needed no more help as she shutdown the Wolves bats, allowing just three hits while striking out six batters.

However, the Wildcat offense was not done scoring as they put up three more runs in the bottom of the fifth with McDaniels, Campbell and Andrea Hamada (Walla Walla, WA, Walla Walla) each driving in a run as CWU won the contest 8-0 in five innings due to the mercy rule.

Game Two: CWU 8, WOU 6

Western Oregon (26-18, 14-4 GNAC) took an early 2-0 lead scoring twice in the top of the first inning, but McDaniels answered back by hitting a solo homerun to deep centerfield, her ninth of the season.  The following inning Wolves left fielder Danielle Harcourt doubled home a run to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Central Washington tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Campbell that scored pinch runner Adrianne DeLay (White Salmon, WA, Columbia), and Hamada followed by scoring Taylor Ferleman (Bellevue, WA, Lake Washington) on a single through the left side of the infield.

The Wolves would once again regain the lead on a bases loaded walk, but the feisty Wildcats wouldn't go away scoring twice in the fifth inning and three more times in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead.

Gau came in as a relief pitcher in the fifth inning and again tamed the Wolves, giving up just two hits and an unearned run while striking out three batters to secure the 8-6 victory.

Gau pitched a total of eight innings on the day scattering five hits and collected nine strikeouts.

The Wildcats currently sit in third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, but can take over sole possession of second place if they can win two games tomorrow when they faceoff with Saint Martin's University at 1pm.
