Box Score 2 Ellensburg, Wash (May 3) – With elimination staring the Central Washington University softball in the face,
Jill McDaniels (Walla Walla, WA, Walla Walla) homered over the center field fence on a 1-2 offering from Western Oregon University's Kelli Demianew, to send the Wildcats into the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship game, in walk-off fashion.
McDaniels, was a perfect 3-for-3 in game one with game-high four RBI in the 6-5 win over the Wolves.
The Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the first innings when McDaniels, singled up the middle with two-outs, scoring
Sammy Morris (Bothell, WA, Bothell) from second base.
Andrea Hamada (Walla Walla, WA, Walla Walla) left the yard in the fourth as she hit a two-run homerun, and McDaniels would follow suit in the fifth, with a solo shot of her own.
The Wildcats turned to multiple pitchers in the win over the Wolves.
Kiana Wood (Aloha, OR, Aloha) went 4 1/3 innings allowing eight hits, two earned runs while striking out two.
Taryn Smith (Olympia, WA, Timberline) followed with two innings of work allowing three earned runs, as
Maria Gau (Woodinville, WA, Woodinville) cleaned up by striking out the only two batters she faced, while earning the win.
Game two saw the Wildcats score seven runs in the bottom of the first as
Kailyn Campbell (Duvall, WA, Cedarcrest), Hamada and
Michaela Hazlett (Purcell, OK, Purcell) collected RBI hits in consecutive plate appearances.
Hamada's RBI single to left chased the Wolves starting pitcher, Eryka Brill, as she lasted only 1/3 of an inning allowing six earned runs.
One inning later the Wolves erupted for eight runs as the first four batters reached safely. A grand slam by Jourdan Williams erased the lead the Wildcats had built the inning prior.
The Wolves would add 12 more runs throughout the game highlighted by two five-run innings in the third and sixth innings.
MARIA GAU battled into third inning, and was chased when Amanda Evola hit a three-run homerun to center field.
Five more runs in the top of the sixth innings increased the lead to 20-9, which would be the final.
"Our girls fought hard today," Head coach
Mallory Holtman-Fletcher said. "We had to battle our way through the loser's bracket to make it to this game, and that really shows what kind of toughness we have and will continue to have until our season is over."
Western Oregon University has earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Regional Tournament with the title win.
Central Washington University began the tournament ranked No. 7 in the region, and will be looking for an at-large bid. The selection show will be airing May 5, at 7 a.m. The Wildcats are expecting to be in the field for a top eight selection.
"I'm proud of what we accomplished here," Holtman-Fletcher said. "We are looking forward to a potential berth in the regional tournament."
