ELLENSBURG, Wash (April. 21) -- The Central Washington softball team will closeout Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with double headers on Friday and Sunday against Western Washington and Simon Fraser, respectively. The Wildcats trail Western Oregon for the fourth and final playoff berth to the GNAC Tournament, which will be held in Yakima, WA.
Â
The Wildcats carry an 18-21 overall record, with a 9-11 conference mark. Last weekend, the Wildcats were swept by Saint Martin's and Western Oregon, losing all four games by one run.
Â
Friday's double-header features a tussle with cross-state rival, Western Washington, who has already locked up a spot in the GNAC Tournament, but remains tied for second with Montana State Billings. Â Sunday, CWU wraps up the regular season with a double header versus Simon Fraser, who has been eliminated from playoff contention with only five conference wins.
Â
The Wildcats are paced by
Sammy Morris,
Austin Wilkerson and
Kailyn Campbell. Campbell, one of the West Region's leading run producers, has 47 RBIs and seven homeruns. Catcher/infielder Wilkerson is tied for first on the team in batting average with a .385 batting average; Wilkerson also has seven homeruns to her name as well.
Â
CWU also sports a double-pronged attack in the circle, with
Lindsey Kamphuis, who leads the team in wins, complete games and innings pitched.
Kiana Wood also gets a bulk of the innings with 93.1 and a 4.05 ERA.
Â
In 2014, the Wildcats made it to the GNAC Tournament title game and were West Regional participants, but will need to get on a roll to mirror those results.
Â
Friday is military appreciation day at Gary and Bobbi Frederick Field.
Â
"Military night is a great way to honor our troops around the world and here in our town," Holtman-Fletcher said. "On top of all the festivities, we are looking forward to the two-game series against our rivals with a chance to get into playoffs this weekend."
Â
Sunday is ALS Awareness Day and CWU will wear special yellow jerseys. The softball team will be selling shirts for $7 and bracelets for $3. Sunday also marks senior day for the Wildcats, who have three graduating seniors,
Katie Focher,
Shelby Yasuda and
Amanda Hopkins.
Â
"ALS awareness day and senior day is always an emotional one but everything going on is for a great cause," Holtman-Fletcher said. "100 percent of the proceeds raised will directly benefit ALS. On top of that, we get to recognize our three seniors for all their hard work and dedication to this team and program. They will be missed and remembered."
Â
Wing Central, Shirtworks and CWU Athletics have partnered to make this event possible.
Â
First pitch Friday afternoon is set for 1 p.m. PST.Â
