ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Apr. 7) – The Central Washington University baseball team heads to Billings, Montana for a four-game stint against Montana State University Billings.
Central enters the series with a 13-14 record overall and a 9-9 mark in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The Yellowjackets are one spot above the Wildcats in the conference table, at 10-9 in the GNAC and 16-12 overall.
Central looks to rebound after being swept by Western Oregon last weekend.
"It was a tough one for sure," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "We couldn't find a rhythm and didn't give ourselves many chances."
After starting last weekend in second place, the Wildcats are now in fourth, with Western Oregon pushing to second and MSUB in third.
The Yellowjackets are coming off a 3-1 weekend against Saint Martin's University. All four games of the series were decided by two runs or less.
When the Wildcats and Yellowjackets squared off earlier this season in Ellensburg, the Wildcats came away with three wins.
That series contained four close games as well, all four games decided by two or less runs.
Leading the Yellowjackets is Kyle Durbin and Luke Reinschmidt. Durbin has posted a .326 average, a team high. Reinschmidt leads MSUB in homeruns (six) runs batted in (30), and hits (34). As a unit, the Yellowjackets are hitting .267 on the season with 19 homeruns.
On the mound, Cody Cooper has posted a 6-0 record over seven starts. In 54.2 innings Cooper has accumulated 57 strikeouts, an opposing batting average of .254, and an earned run average of 2.47. Out of the bullpen Adam Cox has performed spectacularly, throwing 14.1 innings in nine games. He has recorded three saves and an opposing hitter's batting average of .184. Billings' staff has compiled a 4.90 earned run average, three complete games, and an opposing batting average of .274.
"They're a good club," Storey added. "We need to make sure we are consistent on the mound and execute our game."
For the Wildcats,
Reid Martinez leads the offense with a .403 batting average. Central's left fielder has hit two homeruns and drive in 19 runs.
Tanner Romo has worked his way into the starting lineup with a batting average of .388. The Wildcats are hitting .301 as a team with 18 homeruns and 133 runs batted in.
Central is looking for an arm to lead the way in its rotation. Six different pitchers have made starts for the Wildcats, with three of them holding earned run averages below 4.00. Leading the Wildcats' bullpen is
CJ Gettman. The hard throwing righty has appeared in 10 games and recorded four saves. Opposing hitters are struggling against him, hitting at a clip of .175.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. MDT on both Friday and Saturday.
