Box Score ARCATA, Calif. (May 12) -- The historic 2016 Central Washington University softball season came to a close today when the Wildcats lost 11-2 in the NCAA Division II West Super Regional to Humboldt State.
Â
Despite the loss the Wildcats take home a host of accomplishments, including breaking the school record for wins in a season, and becoming the first team in school history to win the GNAC Tournament and the first GNAC school to advance to the Super Regionals.
Â
"I've coached places where it takes teams a couple of seasons to buy into a system and start performing," CWU Head Coach
Mike Larabee said. "From day one, this team bought in to our coaching staff and they have had a terrific season. Obviously we would have liked to win, but I am overflowing with pride of our team."
Â
The Wildcats missed a lot of early opportunities as they had base runners in every inning except the last and stranded 10 runners, seven in the first three innings.
Â
Down 5-0,
Kailyn Campbell hit a solo homerun that landed deep into the tree line the extended past the leftfield scoreboard to give CWU its first score of the game. Â
Taylor Ferleman added a RBI single later in the inning as the Wildcats chipped away at the HSU lead.
Â
"Kailyn hit a moonshot, and it was nice to get that first run in," Larabee added. "We had the chance to score a lot more than two that inning, but getting the runs that we did was a huge confidence builder for our offense.
Â
The Lumberjacks responded in a big way, scoring six more times, including a grand slam in the sixth inning.
Â
"Credit to Humboldt, they are a very good team who can really hit the ball," Larabee said. "They caught fire in the final inning and finished the way a top team should finish."
Â
The softball team will be arriving at Nicholson Pavilion around 9:00 p.m. tonight and will head back to class Friday morning.
