ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Feb. 24) – The Central Washington University baseball heads back down to California for a pair of doubleheaders against the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California.
The Wildcats are coming off of a doubleheader sweep against the College of Idaho last weekend. The Wildcats came from behind in both games, including exploding for nine runs in the ninth inning of game two.
Conor Plaisance leads the Wildcats with a .476 batting average. The center fielder has racked up two homeruns and three runs driven in. He has also clubbed two doubles.
Rory Graf-Brennen is sitting at a .412 average.
On the mound,
Jake Levin leads with a 2-0 record in two starts. He has hurled 13.1 innings, struck out six hitters, and allowed just one run for an earned run average of 0.68.
Mackenzie Gaul has also been pitching well for CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey. Gaul has gone 11 innings with nine strikeouts and an ERA of 3.27.
The Wildcats are hitting .247 as a team. The pitching staff holds an ERA of 3.83, while holding opposing hitters to a .239 average.
"We need to be more consistent both at the plate and on the mound," Storey said. "We've had some good outings and we just need to keep knocking the rust off before conference. This weekend gives us one final tune-up before we begin the meat of our season."
The Academy of Art is 2-6 on the season. The Urban Knights snapped a five-game losing streak with a win over San Francisco State in the back end of a doubleheader on Feb. 12.
Izac Bauer leads the Urban Knights with a .333 average in seven games. Erick Luna is hitting at a .310 clip in eight games. Brennan Mauchline has a pair of homerunrs, a team high, and eight runs batted in, another team high. The Urban Knights are hitting .231 as a team with an on-base percentage of .324.
Brett Boyee leads the pitching staff for the Academy of Art with a 1-1 record in three appearances, two of which were starts. Boyee has pitched 15 innings and held opposing hitters to a .241 batting average. He has an ERA of 1.20 with 11 strikeouts. As a unit, the Urban Knights have an ERA of 4.06. They have struck out 43 hitters and walked 35. Opposing hitters are hitting at a .282 clip.
First pitch is scheduled for noon on both Saturday (Feb. 25) and Sunday (Feb. 26). Game two is scheduled for approximately 3 p.m. on both days. Live stats are available through wildcatsports.com.
