The Wildcats Claw Past the Saints to Second Straight Series Win

LACEY, Wash.—The Central Washington baseball team closed out day two of the four game series against Saint Martin's University with two wins to take the series.

QUOTABLE
"It was a great weekend for us. We got great pitching and we were extremely consistent on offense today. The guys are all working hard on getting better every time we play." Said CWU Head Coach Desi Storey.

GAME 1
The 'Cats were off to a hot start to begin day two against Saint Martin's. Zach Berryman was the first to score on a single from Mitch Lesmeister. A few pitches later Lesmeister came around to swipe home on a wild pitch and the 'Cats were out in front 2-0. Michael Peter was not satisfied, with the bases loaded he drove a single through the right side to bring in Austin Ohland for the score. It only took a handful of pitches for Jake Tilley to draw and walk and get his first RBI of the day, plating Tyler McClain. Jason Hill traded his out for a run with a sacrifice fly to left center to score Michael Copeland. After the first, the Saint's put up three but the 'Cats remained on top 5-3.

The 'Cats found life again in the third, kicked off by a single from Zach Berryman to left field to score Michael Copeland. After Jason Hill reached base, Justin Hampson came up huge with a triple to the right-side scoring both Berryman and Hill. Mitch Lesmiester accepted Hampson's challenge and followed him up with a double to the right side to add another RBI to his box score. After the third, the 'Cats led 9-3.

The Saint's tacked on two more in the fourth, but when the fifth inning rolled around the 'Cats figured they should answer back. Mitch Lesmiester got the inning going for the 'Cats with a single to center field driving in Berryman. Austin Ohland matched him with his own single up the middle to score both Hampson and Lesmeister. Jake Tilley, a man of efficiency, managed his second RBI of the day drawing another walk to bring in Ohland to score. Jason Hill was able to reach base on a fielder's choice although the out did drive in McClain to add to the lead. Zach Berryman decided he wanted to lead the team in RBI's for game one so he shot a double down the right field line that would bring Hill, Tilley and Peter all in to score for the 'Cats. After five, they led the Saint's 17-6.

In the sixth the 'Cats were much quieter but still able to plate a run. A fielder's choice on a ground ball by Michael Peter brought in Ohland to score. The seventh was quite the same, with an easy and efficient sacrifice fly by Trenton Love bringing home Hill to score. McClain followed suit and a throwing error by the Saint's allowed Hampson and Berryman to both scores extending their lead 21-6.

In the eight the 'Cats decided they wanted to see how many they could score. Zach Berryman started the scoring with a single to score Peter's. Trenton Love followed suit with his own single to drive in Berryman. After reaching base previously Justin Hampson utilized his speed and on a fly ball to center field by Tyler McClain, he easily took home after the catch. Walk's were the story as a trio of walks and a hit-by-pitch all back-to-back-to-back-to-back by Michael Peter, Riley Wingerson, Trevor Tripoli and Zach Berryman drove in Love, Ohland, Adam Fahsel and Peter's. Justin Hampson in his second at-bat of the inning singled to right center, plating Wingerson and the 'Cats final run of the game.

The 'Cats closed out game one 30-6. Zach Berryman was an absolute hitting machine going 5-7 with a double, 5 RBI's, 5 Runs and a hit-by-pitch.

GAME 2
Game two was much quieter for the 'Cats. In the second inning McClain reached base on an error and Michael Peter quickly joined him with a single. Jake Engel drew a walk in his first at-bat to load the bases for the 'Cats. Jason Hill was able to reach base on a fielder's choice. The hit cost the 'Cats an out but gave them a run scoring McClain. Zach Berryman followed suit with another infield hit however an error by the Saint's gave Engel and Peter the chance to swipe home for the 'Cats. Justin Hampson tripled to the left side to tack on another, but the 'Cats would be shut down soon after. After two, the 'Cats led 4-0.

In the sixth inning the Saint's scored their only run of the game. They originally cut their deficit to three, but the 'Cats would take that run back in the seventh. Zach Berryman kicked off the seventh with a leadoff walk. The 'Cats decided to play small ball, a bunt by Hampson moved Berryman to second and a single by Lesmeister allowed him to come around and score.

The 'Cats closed the door on the Saint's in the seventh and took game two 5-1, to win the series.

The 'Cats next series is in Monmouth to take on the Wolves of Western Oregon on April 17th.
