Wildcats Showing Improvement During First Week of Camp

Four days into fall camp and Central Washington football head coach Chris Fisk sees plenty to like.

The Wildcats closed their second day in helmets and shoulder pads on Thursday with vigorous 11-on-11 drills, with both the offense and defense coming away with solid efforts at various times.

Overall Fisk is pleased, especially with the energy on the field.

"Typically, day four is a day where you have a lull, but we were able to avoid that today," Fisk said. "We brought some great energy and enthusiasm that we needed to have a good practice. There were a lot of good things out there, but we've got a long way to go. We're still learning football."

Having played just one game in the last 21 months, the Wildcats don't have a lot of recent success to build off. And considering the lone game in that time was 59-3 loss at FCS power Montana last April, it would be understandable if the Wildcats were struggling in their first fall camp in two years.

But that isn't the case, especially for the offense.

"I've been really happy with our execution offensively," Fisk said. "We made some strides to learn the offense in the offseason, and the kids have taken their performance from the Montana game and they're proudly taking ownership of how that went for us offensively."

On the other side of the ball, a plethora of newcomers are learning the system and their roles while mixing with the veterans.

"Defensively, we were hit by opt-outs and we have some new faces filling in and those guys are a work in progress right now, but I would anticipate that they'll catch up really fast," Fisk said.

The Wildcats move into full pads for the first time on Friday.
