ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Five Central Washington University football student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Football Team on Tuesday.
Slade Edwards,
Tyler Flanagan,
Brett McCalla,
Patrick Rogers, and
Dominic Wieburg were each named to the CSC Academic All-District Team. All five will now advance to the CSC Academic All-America finalist's ballot. First-, second-, and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced on Jan. 23, 2024.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution.
Edwards currently owns a 3.82 GPA in Mechanical Engineer Technology. He was a key part of the offensive line this year that allowed the running game to rack up 2,291 yards on the season. Edwards was an anchor to an offensive line that saw the departure of a majority of the starters last season.
Flanagan, the Lone Star Conference Offensive Back of the Year, is earning a 3.58 GPA in Sport Management. Flanagan had quite a bounce back year after getting injured for the season in the first game of the 2022 season. He racked up 1,014 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 175 rushing attempts. He also had 132 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns on 12 receptions.
McCalla currently owns a 3.94 GPA but is undecided on his major. In the offseason he was named a defensive captain and lived up to the title during the season. He finished second on the team in tackles with 95 tackles, 50 solo, 45 assisted. He did lead the 'Cats with 10.5 tackles for loss for a 29-yard loss, including one sack for seven yards. McCalla recorded one interception, two pass breakups, two quarterback hurries, and one fumble recovery in his sophomore season.
Rogers, a First Team Defense All-LSC member, has a 3.69 GPA in Business Administration. You could find him all over the field on defense for the crimson and black recording 63 tackles, 37 solo, 26 assisted, adding tackles for loss for six yards. He led the Wildcats with eight pass breakups while adding one forced fumble and one blocked kick.
Wieburg, the LSC Academic Player of the Year, owns a 3.91 GPA in Law and Justice. Wieburg did a little bit of everything for CWU on defense this year. He recorded 49 tackles, 27 solo, 22 assisted, as well as four tackles for loss for 13 yards. He added one interception, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and a blocked kick.
