Wildcats Head to Western Oregon for Nonconference Action

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington softball team will head back on the road following a brief stint at home to face the Western Oregon Wolves (8-9) in a nonconference two-day double header series this Friday and Saturday.

SCOUTING THE WOLVES
 
The Wolves are coming off a 3-2 weekend down in Tucson, Ariz. in the Cactus Classic. The Wolves posted a 9-1 victory over the Franklin Pierce Ravens and an 11-5 victory over the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles before falling 0-6 to the Mercyhurst Lakers and 1-5 to the Georgian Court Lions. The Wolves bounced back to conclude the Cactus Classic with a 6-2 victory over the Golden Eagles once more.
 
Both teams have faced off 134 times with a dead even split at 67 wins apiece for each program, as the Wildcats went 1-3 in the series last season.
 
The Wolves are led by Natalie Willoughby with a .359 batting average, a .487 slugging percentage, 14 hits, one homerun, and earned six walks. Sophie Franklin has already struck two homeruns while Katelyn McGough has also knocked in one homerun. Maddie Doig and Willoughby have each brought in six RBIs to lead the Wolves.
 
Chelsea Smith has been the ace for the Wolves starting in eight games and accumulating a 2.22 ERA and a 4-4 record. Smith has had five complete games, 47.1 innings pitched, allowed 37 hits, 18 runs, 15 earned runs, 26 walks, and struck out 54 batters. Maddie Mayer is the other regular starter for the Wolves having started eight games and appeared in 10 so far this season. Mayer has accumulated a 4-4 record, 3.29 ERA, with three complete games in 49 innings pitched. Mayer has allowed 50 hits with 24 runs, 23 runs earned, 22 walks, and struck out 31 batters.

"We're looking forward to traveling to Western Oregon this weekend to play a very good team. Their pitchers will present a problem for us and we'll have to be ready. They're solid defensively and can hit which makes for a competitive four games."

The Wildcats will welcome another familiar foe as the Montana State Billings Yellow Jackets comes to Ellensburg for a two-day double-header on Friday, March 3rd and Saturday, March 4th with 11:00 a.m. first pitch with the second games to follow 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one.
