McGill, Matagi Earn LSC Players of the Week Honors

RICHARDSON, Texas – Central Washington sophomore defensive lineman Daniel Matagi was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Joining Matagi in earning honors is sophomore quarterback Kennedy McGill who received the LSC Offensive Player of the Week. The conference announced Monday morning, both earning the first honor of their respective careers. 
  
Matagi assisted the Wildcats defense holding the Texas A&M-Kingsville offense to a total of 129 yards on Saturday evening. Matagi recorded three sacks and a total of 4 tackles for a loss of 28 yards leading the No. 21-ranked Wildcats a shutout of Texas A&M Kingsville. Matagi also had five solo tackles. Matagi and the team now have two shutouts and three games where they did not allow a touchdown this season. 

 
So far in the 2024 season, Matagi has 26 total tackles, seven assisted and leads the 'Cats with 19 solo tackles and 6 tackles for loss and has dropped opponents back a total of 29 yards. 
 

McGill's arm was on fire on Saturday night. He threw for 193 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for 81 yards on 16 carries to lead the 'Cats to a victory. McGill was 10-12 passing without an interception. After a scoreless first quarter, McGill got CWU on the board with 6:42 left in the second with 67-yard TD strike to Darrien Gaines. McGill's longest rush was for 20 yards. He has now thrown for 10 TDs this season and leads the league in rushing yards per game. 
 

So far in the 2024 season, McGill has accumulated 665 rushing yards, six rushing touchdowns, 993 passing yards, and 10 passing touchdowns. 
 

Chris Fisk, Head Coach of the Wildcats, said, "We are all extremely proud of both Daniel and Kennedy and the effort they put in during the game last Saturday. We are very excited for their futures, which both are looking very bright."

The Wildcats will look to continue their 3-0-win streak against Midwestern State this Saturday at home for their Homecoming game. Kickoff will be at 6:00 P.M at the Steve Hertling Field at Tomlinson Stadium.
