THE WILDCATS
Central had a strong weekend after sweeping Saint Martin's last weekend. The Crimson and Black won the first three of the series in decisive fashion, winning by scores of 9-2, 12-5, and 9-4, respectively. However, in the final game on Sunday afternoon, the Saints found the right chances late in the game and tied the game at 4-4 in the final seventh inning. In the bottom of the frame, the 'Cats found their striking blow as
Brandham Ponce sent his third pitch deep over right-center field to walk off the game 5-4.
Ponce's efforts earned him the GNAC Player of the Week award, his third of the season. Along with his walk-off homer, Ponce also tallied 10 hits, 10 RBIs, and one other home run in the first game of the series. Alongside Ponce is
Daniel Charron, whose performance earned him the GNAC Pitcher of the Week, his second GNAC honor of the season. Charron's seven and two-third innings saw him hold the Saints to eight hits, two runs, and zero walks, earning his third victory of the season.
Strong batting performances from Central also included
Brady Hinkle (4 RBI, 4 H),
Baba Varner Jr. (4 RBI, 7 H), and
Ben Leid (3 RBI, 6 H).
Logan Pierce had a strong game of pitching in the final game before giving up the lead in the final frame. Pierce pitched six innings and allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out seven of the 29 batters he faced.
SCOUTING THE WOLVES
Western Oregon had a tough series last weekend, falling to Northwest Nazarene in all four games by scores of 4-9, 2-9, 2-8, and 2-7. The Wolves have had a tough season, going 9-20 overall and 6-14 in-conference. The Wolves got a win against Northwest Nazarene on Feb 28, and then against Montana State Billings on March 21. WOU then swept Saint Martin's on March 29 and March 30 to put the Wolves in better standings within the GNAC. CWU is the only team that Western Oregon has not beaten this season.
The Wolves are led in the batting lineup by Zane Garvey, who has hit for a .375 batting average and a .960 OPS. In his 80 at-bats, Garvey has tallied 30 hits, 14 runs, and 12 RBIs. Owen Bischoff (.299) and Collin Irwin (.281) also have had strong performances for WOU this season. Devin Bell has been strong for the Wolves on the mound. In his 46 and one-third innings pitched, Bell has allowed 15 runs on 30 hits and struck out 44 batters for a 2.72 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.
The Wildcats and Wolves take the field starting on Saturday, April 12. First pitch from the WOU Baseball Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
