LAST WEEKEND:
Central dropped the first two games of its GNAC-opening series before bouncing back to split the final two contests against Montana State Billings at Yakima County Stadium. The Yellowjackets took the opener 14-3 on Feb. 27 behind an 18-hit performance, then edged the Wildcats 3-2 in the nightcap. The Wildcats responded on Feb. 28 with a 6-5 comeback victory, scoring three runs in the eighth inning to secure their first conference win. Over the four-game stretch, CWU went 1-3, including two one-run games.
Offensively,
Kaiden Hernandez and
Ethan Buckley led the Wildcats during the stretch. Hernandez recorded multiple hits in the series, including a two-hit, two-RBI performance in the 6-5 win, while Buckley added a two-hit game with two RBIs in the same contest.
Logan Blank and
Conrad Henkel each contributed multi-hit efforts, and
Andrew Charron drove in runs in multiple games. On the mound,
Kyler Malnar worked seven innings in game three before
Drake Anderson closed the final two innings to earn the victory.
Garet Hagy delivered a complete-game effort in game two's 3-2 loss, allowing just four hits and three runs while striking out seven.
SCOUTING THE WOLVES:
Western Oregon opened GNAC play with four games at Northwest Nazarene on Feb. 27-28 at Elmore Vail Field, dropping the series despite a high-scoring opener. The Wolves fell 14-13 in the opener after surrendering two runs in the eighth, despite leading by four runs earlier in the game. Later that day, Northwest Nazarene pulled away for an 11-3 victory in the seven-inning contest. On Feb. 28, the Nighthawks continued their momentum with an 11-2 win as a five-run fifth inning broke the game open. WOU's offense produced early runs in multiple games, including a seven-run fifth inning in the opener, but the Nighthawks capitalized on late offense and defensive miscues to secure the series sweep.
Individually, several Wolves produced strong performances at the plate. Zane Garvey led the offense with multiple multi-hit efforts, including a three-hit game with a home run and two runs scored in the Feb. 28 matchup. Chris Arce recorded three hits and two RBIs in the Feb. 27 night game and added a home run, while also tallying multiple hits in the series. Tyler Mohler delivered one of the biggest offensive games of the weekend in the opener, going 2-for-3 with a home run and six RBIs. Alex Harden added multiple hits in two games, and Alex Angevine and Benny Nazario each drove in multiple runs during the series as Western Oregon totaled double-digit hits in two of the four contests.
The Wildcats and Wolves take the field starting on Saturday, March 7. First pitch from the WOU Baseball Field is set for noon.
