Gordon, Kriete & Theophilus Honored by GNAC Following Weekend Performances

PORTLAND, Ore.- Three Central Washington University standout student-athletes were honored by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Monday afternoon following outstanding performances over the weekend. Maliyah Gordon was named Women's Field Athlete of the Week, Wes Kriete was tabbed Men's Field Athlete of the Week, and Zoey Theophilus earned Softball Pitcher of the Week honors.

Maliyah Gordon swept three throwing events at last week's CWU Wildcat Opener, winning the shot put with a mark of 42-8.25 (13.01m), the discus at 132-2 (40.28m), and the hammer throw at 140-11 (42.95m). The GNAC Indoor Championships gold medalist is expected to be a key contributor for the Wildcats during the outdoor season. Gordon and the 'Cats return to action March 20 at the Oregon Preview in Eugene, Oregon.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JONATHAN HILL
"In Maliyah's NCAA outdoor debut, she opened up with three event wins, the number nine shot put mark in CWU history and a conference lead in the shot put. Following a 15-point performance at the GNAC Indoor Championships, she is establishing herself as one of the GNAC's most versatile throwers and is one of the best to ever wear the Wildcat uniform."

Wes Kriete paced the men's throws with three victories at the Wildcats' home opener over the weekend. The junior won the discus with a personal-best throw of 157-11 (48.13m) and the hammer throw with another PR of 161-5 (49.20m), while also claiming the shot put title with a mark of 52-1 (15.87m). Kriete will look to carry that momentum into the outdoor season when the Wildcats return to action March 20 at the Oregon Preview in Eugene, Oregon.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JONATHAN HILL
"Wes came away from our home opener with three event wins. He is becoming one of the GNAC's most dynamic competitors across the throwing events, and he exemplifies Wildcat leadership. We are enthusiastic to see his progress over the rest of the outdoor season."

Theophilus started two games for the 'Cats this weekend, helping guide CWU to their weekend victory in game two on Saturday. She first pitched three innings on Friday allowing five hits, three runs, one walk, and two strikeouts against 13 batters. She had a standout outing on Saturday she pitched all seven innings allowing six hits, one run, two walks, and struck out eight of 29 batters she faced. She also did not commit an error on the weekend.

Theophilus has accumulated a 4-4 record this season with a 6.16 ERA and pitched one shutout in 44.1 innings pitched. She's allowed 51 hits, 45 runs with only 39 earned, 32 walks, and has racked up 29 strikeouts against 218 batters.

The Wildcats are back in action this weekend when they head north of the border for a four-game nonconference series at Simon Fraser. The 'Cats and Red Leafs clash on Friday and Saturday with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday with game two to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one each day.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RONNIE LADINES
"Zoey has been a competitor in the circle," CWU Head Softball Coach Ronnie Ladines said. "This weekend she shut down a tough offense while staying poised and in control. Her steady presence in the circle sets the tone and the team feeds off the calm confidence she brings every inning. I'm so proud of the way she continues to lead for us."
