Wildcat Baseball Shut Out by Seattle University

Redhawks Hit Three Home Runs in 5-0 Win over Wildcats

Box Score

BELLEVUE (Apr. 16) -- The Central Washington University baseball team turned a first-inning triple play against Seattle University on Saturday afternoon, but the Redhawks hit three home runs to defeat the Wildcats, 5-0, at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.

The Wildcats lost both games of their weekend series with SeattleU and fell to 10-24 on the season. The NCAA Division I Redhawks improved to 14-15.

The Wildcats finished the first inning in spectacular fashion, turning a rare triple play to end a potential Seattle University rally. The Redhawks' first two batters of the inning reached safely to load the bases. Josh Kalalau then hit a groundball to CWU junior third baseman Glen Reser (Spokane/Mead HS), who stepped on his bag and threw to junior second baseman Brandon Wang (Mill Creek/Henry M. Jackson HS), who completed the triple play by touching his bag and relaying the ball to senior first baseman Kris Henderson (Liberty Lake/Central Valley HS) for the final out.

SeattleU scored four of its five runs in the game on home runs, hitting solo blasts in the third and seventh innings by Josh Kutz and Nate Roberts, respectively, and a two-run homerun in the fourth by Kalalau. Their fifth and final tally came in the eighth inning as they scored on a wild pitch.

The Wildcats, who were shutout for the fourth time this season, had their best chance of scoring a run in the third inning when junior Brett Bielec (Port Orchard/North Mason HS) led off with a walk, then stole second base to advance to scoring position. With two outs, senior Nate Wallen (Bremerton/Central Kitsap HS) hit a single up the middle and Bielec attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Central Washington starting pitcher Ryan Hastings (Lynden) threw 55 pitches in five innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs, but suffered his fifth loss of the season (2-5).

Redhawk starter Arlo Evasick won his first game of the season (1-3), going six innings, allowing four hits while striking out four.

The Wildcats return home to host a pair of doubleheaders against Saint Martin's University on Friday (Apr. 22) at 1 p.m., and Saturday (Apr. 23) at noon.
