LACEY (Apr. 22) -- The Central Washington University baseball team overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Saint Martin's University, 10-3, in the completion of a suspended game on the Saint Martin's University campus on Monday afternoon. Saint Martin's won the opening game of the doubleheader that began on Sunday, taking a 5-4 decision in 10 innings.
The Wildcats won the four-game series, three games to one, and improved to 26-16 overall on the season. CWU is one game behind Western Oregon University in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 17-7 league record and eight games remaining to be played in the regular season. Saint Martin's is now 5-35 overall and 3-20 in the GNAC.
GAME ONE: Saint Martin's 5, CWU 4 (10 innings)
Alex Bielaski capped a three-hit game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Saint Martin's rallied for a 5-4 victory on Sunday.
CWU had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in support of junior right-handed pitcher
Stuart Fewel (Portland, Ore./Wilson HS), scoring single runs in the second, fourth, and seventh innings. However, Fewel allowed a run in the seventh inning, and left two runners on base when he exited with two out, and Saint Martin's scored both those runs plus another to take a 4-3 lead.
The Wildcats tied the game in the top of the eighth inning on a one-out RBI single by junior
Joel Johnson (Olympia). CWU then advanced Johnson -- the potential tying run -- to third base with two out but was unable to score him and the game remained deadlocked. The Wildcats then left runners on the corners in the top of the 10th without being able to take the lead.
Bielaski had two doubles earlier in the contest before hitting his first home run of the season on a 2-1 pitch in the bottom of the 10th. The Saints' junior outfielder finished with three of his team's eight hits in the contest.
Fewel left with a no-decision despite striking out five in his 6 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore
Davis Engel (Ellensburg) took the loss after three innings of relief in which he allowed just two hits.
Johnson led the Wildcats' 13-hit attack with a 4-for-5 performance.
GAME TWO: CWU 10, Saint Martin's 3
In a game halted by rain after four innings of play on Sunday, the Wildcats combined for five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings on Monday to earn a doubleheader split with a 10-3 win.
CWU fell behind, 3-0, in the first inning as Saint Martin's collected four hits for an early lead. The Wildcats responded with two runs in the second on a single by senior
Justin Peterson (Tacoma/Life Christian Academy), and then took the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs -- including two on a single by senior
Kyle Sani (Kennewick/Southridge HS) -- and CWU held a 5-3 advantage after four innings of play.
Following the resumption of play on Monday, the Wildcats added to their lead with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Junior
Joe Castro (Union City, Calif./James Logan HS) delivered two runs in the fifth with a double, while junior
Spencer Hannah (Ferndale) had a RBI single and senior
Marc Garza (Othello) brought in a run with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. CWU scored its other run in the sixth on a wild pitch.
Four pitchers appeared in the game for the Wildcats, with the third of those -- sophomore
Max Dickinson (Hoquiam) -- earning the victory after two scoreless innings of relief. Junior
Willie Davies (Shoreline/Shorecrest HS) pitched all three innings after the game was resumed on Monday, allowing just three hits to earn his second save of the season.
Offensively, Sani had three hits, while Castro and freshman
Kramer Ferrell (Ellensburg) added two each. Ferrell also scored three runs in the contest.
Mario Sanelli led Saint Martin's with three hits in four at-bats.
CWU plays its final four away games of the regular season this weekend, traveling to Montana State University Billings for a Friday-Saturday series. The Wildcats then wrap up the regular season at home on May 3-4 against Western Oregon.
