CWU Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Academy of Art

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OAKLAND, Calif. (Feb. 16) -- The Central Washington University baseball team took advantage of subpar defense en route to its third straight win with a 6-2 victory over The Academy of Art in game one.  The Urban Knights rebounded by defeating the Wildcats 8-6 in the nightcap.

With the split,  the Wildcats now stand with a 3-2 record, while AAU sits at 4-3.

In game one, the Urban Knights had six errors, and the Wildcats took full advantage of them as they scored three unearned runs in the contest.

Junior catcher ZACH REAY (Blackfoot, ID/Blackfoot HS) led CWU as the only hitter to record multiple hits in the game going 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Senior outfielder ETHAN STERKEL (Ellensburg HS) was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Central Washington got another stellar performance from its starting pitcher, this time it was SKYE ADAMS (Columbia River HS).  Adams (1-1) threw seven innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs while striking out eight Urban Knight opponents.

The Wildcats started game-two off hot, socring five runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-run homer by KASEY BIELEC (North Mason HS), a RBI single by JOSH POTTER and a pair of bases loaded walks by JOEL JOHNSON (Olympia HS) and Joe Castro (Union City, CA/James Logan HS).

The Urban Knights battled back scoring two-run in each of the first four innings to take the final 8-6 lead over CWU.

Central Washington starting pitcher, DAVIS ENGEL, had a rough outing giving up four runs on six hits through 1 2/3 innings of work.  The AAU offense did damage to each hurler the Wildcats sent their way as relievers Jefferey Larabee (Mount Rainier HS) and WILLIE DAVIES (Shorecrest HS) combined to throw 4 1/3 innings giving up four runs on seven hits with Larabee picking up the loss (0-1).

Bielec was 1-for-2 in the night cap with 3 RBI and a run scored.  JOSH POTTER (Mount Rainier HS) continued his hot hitting as he went 1-for-3 with a RBI.

The baseball team will wrap up its four game series with the Urban Knights tomorrow, Feb. 16  with a single game starting at 10 a.m.
