Another Dominating Performance from Brandon Williams Earns CWU Baseball a Split with SMU

Complete game 2-hit shutout in game 2 -- 9ks
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Mar. 29) -- Central Washington University pitcher Brandon Williams (Auburn, WA, Auburn Mountainview) continued his dominance on the mound by throwing a complete game two-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over Saint Martin's University Saturday afternoon at the CWU Baseball Field.  The visiting Saints won game one 10-7.

Williams is now 5-1 on the season and 5-0 in games that he has started.  The Wildcats (13-2, 6-8 GNAC) are a perfect 6-0 in games that he has started this season.  Williams totaled nine strikeouts in today's performance, fanning the side in the eighth inning.

Eric Tinnell (Ephrata, WA, Ephrata), who was 5-for-7 on the day, drove in the Wildcats first run in game two on a RBI single in the third inning scoring JOEL JOHNSON to take a 1-0 lead.

Central Washington added the final two runs of the contest in the sixth inning on a run scoring groundout by Cory Welch (Las Vegas, NV, Bishop Gorman) and a RBI single by JAKE LEVIN that scored Kasey Bielec (Port Orchard, WA, North Mason).

Game one was started out well for the Wildcats, and quickly turned in favor of the Saints.  The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the first inning on RBI hits by Tinnell and Bielec, but the Saints responded by scoring six runs off eight hits in the top of the second inning to take a 7-2 lead.

Tinnell brought home his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the second inning scoring Zach Reay (Blackfoot, ID, Blackfoot) to cut the lead to 7-3, but Saint Martin's scored twice in the seventh inning and once more in the eighth to take a commanding 10-3 lead.

The Wildcats tried hard to make a comeback by scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBI doubles by Jake Levin (Redmond, WA, Redmond) and Reay, as well as a RBI single by Joel Johnson (Olympia, WA, Olympia), but were unable to catch the Saint's who walked away with the 10-3 win.

Skye Adams (Vancouver, WA, Columbia River) had a shaky start for CWU only going 1 2/3 innings giving up seven runs off 10 hits.  Nolan Amundson (Boise, ID, Timberline) and Davis Engel (Ellensburg, WA, Ellensburg) did well in relief combining to throw 7 2/3 innings giving up 5 hits and just two runs while striking out six batters.

Bielec was 3-for-8 on the day, getting hits in each game, extending his hitting streak to eight games and is now batting .390 on the season.  Welch and Ethan Sterkel (Ellensburg, WA, Ellensburg) each went hitless on the afternoon, which ended a ten game and nine game hitting streak respectively.

The Wildcats will attempt to win the home series with Saint Martin's as the two schools faceoff for another doubleheader tomorrow at Noon.
